"Lara Croft: Tomb Raider", Paramount Pictures, 2001, Color, Filmed spherically and presented at measured aspect ratio 2.35:1, DD, 1 Hr 40 min, Rated PG-13; Angelina Jolie, Jon Voight, Noah Taylor, Iain Glen; Lara Croft (Jolie), a British heiress to Lord Richard Croft (Voight) after his mysterious death, follows in her father's footsteps as an archeologist searching for occult artifacts. She discovers that a secret society called the Illuminati, are trying to obtain The Triangle of Light, which is an artifact that could be used to control the world if it fell into the hands of evil. So, around the world they all go, each trying to obtain the Triangle before the other, one representing bad, the other, good. Any gamer will know the film is based on a computer game character of the same name. Jolie is up to the task, with a little help from foam padding and computer animation.   - JEJ -

"Replicant", Artisan Entertainment. 2001, Color, Filmed spherically and presented at measured aspect ratio 1.78:1, DD, 1 Hr 40 min, Rated R; Jean -Claude Van Damme, Michael Rooker, Catherin Dent; A serial killer in Seattle named Garrotte (van Damme) leaves the police baffled, so the National Security Foundation brings one of the Seattle Detectives, Jake (Rooker) into their offices and explains that they have replicated Garrotte using a hair sample he left behind at a murder scene. They offer Jake the replicant so that he might lead Jake to Garrotte. The action is OK and so is the acting, but the science is so absurd, this movie bypassed the theaters and went directly to video.   - JEJ -

"Planet of the Apes", Twentieth Century Fox, 2001, Color, Filmed in Panavision and presented at measured aspect ratio 2.32:1, DD, DTS, 2 Hr 4 min, Rated PG-13; Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Kris Kristofferson; In the year 2029, American Astronaut Captain Leo Davidson (Wahberg) launches himself from the mother ship into an electromagnetic storm to rescue an errant pod, and finds himself on a planet run by apes, where humans are slaves. General Thade (Roth) is particularly brutal and realizes that this human is dangerous. With the help of an ape who is a human rights activist, Ari (Carter), and a human family, Leo searches for an ancient temple that holds the key for their escape. The movie jumps right into the story, knowing that just about everybody has seen the original film that starred Charlton Heston. In fact, Heston makes a cameo appearance as Thade's dying father. Wahlberg's acting is mediocre, but Roth and Carter are superb. This, plus the incredible makeup and special effects, will provide you with a very entertaining evening.  - JEJ -
