Riccardo Chailly's two-disc set of Varèse: The Complete Works (London/Decca 289 460 208-2) recently won a Gramophone award for its outstanding performances. Now we have two new, competing recordings of some of Edgard Varèse's most important works. The bargain-priced Naxos 8.554820 offers Arcana, Intégrales, and Déserts with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christopher Lyndon-Gee; Deutsche Grammophon 289 471 137-2 contains Amériques, Arcana, Déserts, and Ionisation played by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pierre Boulez.
