Conclusions

In general, my theater space comprises three parts. The main part is roughly 25’ x 25’ Almost a perfect square. The other two parts are two contiguous rooms that are connected to the main space by way of large openings. The acoustics of the space are generally very good, but the room does incorporate a large volume of air, presenting a potential source of strain on a subwoofer. To be honest, I was concerned that the Optimum-12 would have difficulty achieving reference levels in this space. Now that I have been able to spend some quality time with this sub, I am pleased to report that it handled just about everything I threw at it without obvious signs of strain. As long as the sub level was set to properly integrate with the rest of the program material, the sub went about its business without complaint unless I was attempting to play rock music at insane live concert levels. Not that I’ve ever been known to attempt a stunt like that!

The street price for the Optimum-12 will probably be around $1,500. At this price point, I would say it is a good value and worthy of consideration if you have a subwoofer budget of up to $2,500. I, for one, could happily live with an Optimum-12, even in my large theater.

Any plans for measurements?

...
written by JEJ , December 29, 2008

Velodyne brought up three of their new subwoofer lines for me to do some testing, but in the case of the Optimum line, it was the Optimum-10. This was at an early stage in shipments and the subs were just starting to arrive from China. The Optimum-12 ended up being the Optimum version that was sent out for review. I do have measurements for the Optimum-10 however. The frequency response is flat down to 27 Hz then declines 10 dB at 20 Hz. For THD plus N vs. Frequency, distortion is about 10% between 20 and 30 Hz, then declines to 0.5% at 60 Hz. This is excellent performance for a 10 inch sub, and one can only expect the Optimum-12 to do even better.

Part of the problem in bench testing for us now is that we added 17 new writers, and we will not have the time to bench test everything, including subwoofers which is one item I love to put on the bench.

Optimum 12

According to my trusty Radio Shack SPL meter, the Optimum 12 rolls off at around 23 Hz in my theater.

Compare?
written by Getus , July 14, 2009

How does this sub compare against two svs sb12 plus?

Because there both 12 inch and have a sealed box. And they have an eq build in to them.

And for the price of one Velodyne i can get two svs...

Thanks in Advance

Velodyne Optimum-12 In High End Stereo

I have a pair of these. They replaced JL Audio f112s, which are a too analytical and dry sounding for me. They take a long time - 300+ hours - to really break in. They do their job without fuss or being obvious. The volume and crossover point adjustments are critical and just one step in the volume adjustment can make or break the overall sound. But get it right and these are great subs.

Other system components: Dali Euphonia RS3 speakers, Marantz MA-9S2 amps, SOTA Cosmos turntable, Manley Steelhead phono/preamp.

F-series Velodyne servo tech

Why did they discontinue the F-series 10",12" and the 15". They were highly touted for in the 70's. I bought the 12" and I'm still using it. You counldn't get a better self powered with remote and the clarity of low bass. They worked well with bookshelf speakers and they were making some powerful book shelf speakers back then when Pro-Logic Surround was the big deal. I wish I had another one. I bet there is still a market out there for the F-Series especially for people like me that wished I could buy another just like the one I have. I even made a custom size wooden cart on casters to place it where ever it sounds best around in the house. I use poly rope to transport it with ease. The Optimum was a replacement for the F-Series.
