Conclusions A little over a year ago, Onkyo delivered a real winner with the TX-SR605. The TX-SR606 is all that and more with 4 HDMI inputs and Auddessey2EQ. I recommend this receiver if you are in the market for an upgrade in performance and flexibility. If you are not looking for all the bells and whistles of Onkyo’s flagship, the TX-NR906, this may be all you need in a moderate sized home theater. Its design and performance make it a worthy successor to the 605. Recommended! Comments (12)

7.1 signal processing
written by Brian , April 03, 2009 Having owned the 605 I know that it would not process/matrix a 5.1 signal for 7.1 playback. I purchased the 805 as a result and never really looked back. I see you have a 5.1 setup, but would you mind looking in the documentation it should indicate if it now upconverts to 7.1? Also I believe a 607 is the current state of the art and it is supposed to support a height or presence channel, albeit only at 7.1.
Upgrade alert!
written by Jim , April 03, 2009 Just found out hat the TX-SR606 is being upgraded by the TX-SR607 for the same MSRP of $599: http://www.onkyousa.com/Video/TX-SR607final.swf
Re: Upgrade Alert
written by Chris Heinonen , April 03, 2009 I'm not so sure I'd classify is as an upgrade, as being replaced. The new model adds another HDMI input, HD Radio, and the ability to run a 2nd pair of speakers in the front for height, but you also lose S-Video inputs (which I don't use, but some still might) and you also lose a 7.1 analog input, which matters far more to me. Many people will be using HDMI for all their audio inputs, but for people that need that 7.1 input they'll need to set up to a different model. The new model also weighs less, which could be due to using lighter weight parts that don't make much of a difference, or it could be due to a lower end power supply that would reduce the power available to the amplifier. I have the 606 myself and enjoy it, but I would keep it over the new 607 for those reasons.

written by Jim , April 03, 2009 Brian, the 606 will not upconvertor matrix 5.1 to 7.1- From their website: "Dolby and DTS have each developed improved audio formats to be encoded on these new DVD discs that will superbly complement the latest in high definition video. By connecting a player compatible with these new audio codecs to an Onkyo A/V receiver equipped with 7.1 multichannel inputs, you will be able to experience extreme sonic clarity from these new discs, while retaining the full use of the receiver’s other onboard codecs." ...and yes, with the advent of the 607, maybe DPLIIz will now be the next "thing" consumers demand
HDMI- 607
written by JWM , April 04, 2009 The 607 will sport 6 HDMI...it will be the first receiver to have one in the front!
606 Owner input
written by Derek , April 04, 2009 The 606 also does Bi-Amping. I picked up 3 B&W 600 Series speakers and the two front mains work great Bi-Amped. My 606 started buzzing recently when it is firdt turned on so I need to get it looked at. The 606 has decent upconversion and passes 1080p from my computer over HDMI with 2.0 audio from my ATI 2600 and 5.1 from my nVidia 8600. I also have a SVC 10d which is known to be very flat but the whole system sounds MUCH better with Auddessey. the 607 looks good too but I don't think my wife would like another speaker abover the TV and one on the ceiling. Overall, I am VERY happy with the receiver. It's twice the height of my old JVC 402 and has 4 more HDMI inputs than my older Denon 1801.
NOT First Receiver with Front HDMI
written by Drew , April 06, 2009 The Sony STR-DA6400ES is the first receiver to have an HDMI port on the front. It is, however, the first in it's class, since the Sony is $2,500 and in the category of the Onkyo 906...
Yes it will!
written by Duckman , April 16, 2009 A previous commenter interpreted the onkyo website blurb to mean that "the 606 will not upconvertor matrix 5.1 to 7.1." But as an owner I can tell you IT DOES, and beautifully. What it will not 'upconvert' is the multi-channel analog inputs. Since my monitor (A pioneer Elite 701) does not have HDMI I sent the output from my Blu Ray and HD-DVD players to the 606 using Toslink. The 7.1 output is incredible, smooth, balanced and seemless.
Decoding question
written by ISW , April 21, 2009 I use the SR605, which I understand will decode DTS soundtracks on SD DVD's. I have my Oppo 981 DVD player set to "raw", which I believe will pass through the audio codec the DVD player reads off the SD DVD directly to the SR605. Why is then that when I play "Master and Commander" and set the soundtrack to DTS, the SR605 does not display the little "DTS" logo and instead displays "Multichannel PCM"? Jim Milton in his review on page 3 remarks about this but I don't understand it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
DTS
written by JWM , April 22, 2009 ...set the Oppo to output "bitstream" and see if that does the trick! Soundwise, you will not hear any difference, but the DTS should light up.
Unbelievable Audio Performance
written by lyndon , May 07, 2009 Forget about the features, the audio performance of this 606 in terms of slam, weight and cinematic impact is just amazing. This receiver totally killed my Yamaha RXV430 for scale and detail. My uncle purchased a Integra 7.9 and it is only incrementally more detailed in the rear channel...and I am talking a small increment. The 606 was so amazing for the money that it made me want to spend more money...funny psychology but I was almost dissatisfied spending so little on a receiver.
Question Video input/output
written by Jan , August 19, 2009 Is it possible to connect a HDD player with S-video to the Onkyo SR606 or SR607 and reroute the videosignal via HDMI to the TV. And have the choice for audio via the TV (through HDMI cable) or via the receiver. (analog audio cable connected to the receiver) Many thanks, regards, Jan Write comment
