Axiom Audio Launches New “Monster” Center Channel

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Dwight, Ontario, Canada (February 2nd 2012) – Axiom Audio (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/avdirectory/944-companies/1113-axiom-audio.html), long known as a leader in sound quality research, has added another center channel to round out its comprehensive center lineup. The company announced today the official release of its VP160 Center Channel, an innovative center speaker design that takes its cue from the M60 tower speaker, one of Axiom’s most popular products.

Designed to place dialog right in the center of the action, the VP160 Center Channel features the same 6.5-inch woofers, 5.25-inch mid-woofer, and 1-inch titanium tweeter as the M60 tower speaker. Using the same drivers gives the listener a seamless soundstage across the front array.

In order to match the kind of serious output the M60 floor standing speaker can provide, Axiom had to build a "monster" center channel. The VP160 weighs in at an impressive 43 pounds: not for the faint of heart! Because of its significant weight, the company does not recommend wall-mounting the speaker. Instead, they suggest putting it on a shelf or the dedicated stand available on their site, the FMS 160. Also included in the speaker are two signature vortex ports — corrugated ports exclusive to Axiom Audio that eliminate port noise — which allow even greater sound output from a smaller cabinet.

In an era where many loudspeaker companies produce smaller and smaller products, Axiom stands out as bucking the trend.

"We relentlessly pursue the most exciting audio experience we can provide," said Axiom founder and chief engineer, Ian Colquhoun. "Bigger speakers mean more emotion, more thrills, more explosions, more romance, more excitement. The bigger the cabinet, and the wider the range of frequencies you can provide to the home theater listener, the more realistic their experience will be."

By emphasizing the practical application of their ongoing research, Axiom brings unprecedented value to the marketplace, expanding on their ethos of high-end, high value sound with the VP160 Center Channel Speaker. The product is priced at $570, including shipping anywhere in North America (encompassing Alaska and Hawaii). It can be special-ordered in an inverted configuration for low placement under the video display (angling the sound up towards the listener) or in an in-cabinet version, for customers who are doing a built in wall of sound in their installation. The product can be shipped anywhere in the world that FedEx travels, and international pricing is available on their website.

Like all Axiom products, this speaker can be customized to suit almost any décor. Axiom offers 2 standard finishes (Black Oak and Boston Cherry), as well as over 100 customized finish options. If customers need a stain or finish that Axiom doesn’t carry, they can match a paint sample or wood sample to make a truly customized speaker. All the speakers are built to order in their factory in Dwight, Ontario, Canada.

Ian Colquhoun, Founder and President of Axiom Audio, created the company sparking a new period of progress in the annals of loudspeaker design with his work at the National Research Council lab in Ottawa, Canada. There he spent innumerable hours perfecting innovation after innovation. In 2005, Axiom installed its own anechoic chamber, a perfect replica of the chamber at the National Research Council, and became one of only a handful of loudspeaker companies in the world with such advanced research capabilities in-house.

The site maintains a home theater speaker forum where you can go to ask questions, offer advice or have technical issues addressed. If you’re interested in the latest information about any aspect of speakers, you’ll find it there. The experts at Axiom Audio are available six days a week to help you with your speaker questions and concerns.

One of the members of the Research and Development team, Debbie Swinton, offers a first look’ video of the VP160 Center Speaker on the company’s video center.

About Axiom Audio

At Axiom, we have one passion: scientifically proven superior loudspeaker design based on careful lab measurements and proven double-blind listening tests conducted in the Axiom listening room with a variety of listeners who do not know the price, brand, or model of the speakers they are comparing. This results in speakers of extraordinary musical transparency and realism. For more information, contact us by phone at 1-866-244-8796.

MODVO expands their second-generation products

For nearly 2 years, our 2nd generation products have been in work for some time now.  The very first 2nd generation speaker was Introduce as the EX-90 (from the Executive Line).  This product was in beta testing with a release date in February of 2010, but due to unavailable parts, this product had to be put on the shelf.  In response to this misfortune, we decided to continue the push of our 1st generation products (Reference MM-100 and CM-100 Modules).  The Reference Mini Monitor 100 (reference MM-100) speaker (nearly 3 years old) still holds its own and offers exceptional quality and performance for the price.  At just $250 a pair, these speakers offers  hand built cabinets and crossovers with high quality components that use point-to-point soldering (no PC boards), usually found in speakers costing almost twice their price.

Studio Monitoring

Part of our second generation products will include a full-line of studio monitor speakers.    This new line-up will be geared towards individuals who are in the field of music and mixing.  This line will follow the traditional design of the CM-100 monitor speaker.  The not so flashy, but more serious look will draw professionals and individuals who care more about sound quality and accuracy rather then looks.  “We are really excited about this new line-up, these speakers have just the right sound we been looking for, not too bright or harsh.”  The Studio 8 version (larger 8″ model) offers accurate sound that is well balance and realistic sounding.

To Come

We believe our 2nd generation products will take a big step forward from our previous models with more accurate sound.  This will set the stage for our ideas to grow and hopefully become the choice of many consumers and professionals to come.

Anthem Statement M1 Amplifier Redefines Class D Category

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

The one kilowatt, single rack unit Class D mono power amplifier outperforms its class with sophisticated monitoring circuits that maintain proper frequency response, even when powering the heaviest speaker loads using a 120V line.

Toronto, ON – November 14, 2011 – Anthem, the leading manufacturer of high-end electronics for music, home theater and distributed audio systems, is now shipping the Anthem Statement M1.  Anthem’s game-changing monaural powerhouse annihilates conventional audiophile wisdom about Class D amplification with flawless fidelity and full dynamic range across all volume levels, flat frequency response and rock-solid stability into even the most difficult loads, no “dead time” crossover distortion, and virtually no noise floor.

What’s more, the M1 makes such radical improvements over previous Class D amplifier designs while still maintaining all of the benefits that Class D design brings to the table. Class D architecture provides tremendous value over traditional Class A and Class AB designs because of its efficient output and smaller form factor, both of which the M1 perfectly embodies. Its heat pipe cooling system and deep side-mounted heat sinks allow multiple M1s, with feet removed, to be rack-mounted directly on one another, each occupying only a single rack unit. Its fanless design also makes the M1 as well-suited for the quietest of listening rooms as it is the most crowded equipment closets.

“The Anthem design team conceptualized the M1 almost 10 years ago, illustrating just how much in-house design and engineering went into producing this amplifier,” said Mark Aling, director of marketing for Anthem. “More than just a slim, technologically advanced monaural, the M1 demonstrates that Class D architecture isn’t fundamentally flawed, it merely hasn’t been implemented well in the past, mainly because it required such a heavy commitment to R&D. We’re fortunate to have the resources necessary to create such a groundbreaking product and strongly believe our customers will appreciate the effort.”

Don’t be confused by the “D” in “Class D”—the Statement M1 is not a digital amplifier. It boasts all the warmth and clarity of a traditional amp, in addition to a temporal resolution more than 80 times that of the audiophile-favorite SACD format, and does so with an astounding amount of power. While Anthem’s own award-winning Statement P5, for example, outputs 500 watts with a 4-ohm load, the M1 delivers 2,000 watts to the same speaker, with total harmonic distortion remaining under 0.1% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. (Into 8 ohms, it delivers 1000 watts with a less than 0.06% total harmonic distortion.)  And frequency response is load-independent, so the difference in response between a 2-ohm load and an open circuit is an astounding 0.1 dB at 20 kHz. Between 4 ohms and 8 ohms there is absolutely no change in frequency response.

The Statement M1 attains this level of power, performance, and consistency through the employment of a few key technologies, including a proprietary load monitoring system that relies on a Digital Signal Processor—outside the signal path!—to monitor line voltage, output current, ground fault detection, temperature, and DC voltage at the output to ensure the highest possible output from either a 120V or 240V circuit. Power Factor Correction maximizes available power by marrying the voltage and current cycles, enabling continuous output from the power supply through the entire AC cycle without contaminating the AC line with noise.

While all of this innovation adds up to an amplifier that is admittedly not inexpensive, the Anthem Statement M1 nonetheless represents an unparalleled value in terms of price versus performance, with ample headroom to drive even the most power-hungry speakers, and the utmost in clarity and focus demanded by the most discerning listeners.

The Anthem Statement M1 is shipping now, with a US MRSP of $3499. More information on Anthem can be found at www.anthemAV.com.

McIntosh and John Varvatos Host a “Curation of Music” Vinyl Listening Experience with Legenary Producer Tony Visconti

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Visconti Will Play Hits and Share Stories About Producing Landmark Music with David Bowie, Thin Lizzy, The Moody Blues

McIntosh Laboratory, global leader in prestige quality audio for over 60 years, joined forces with award-winning designer John Varvatos to host a special “Curation of Music” vinyl listening experience at the Soho House New York on Monday, September 26, featuring legendary Grammy Award-winning producer and respected author Tony Visconti. Visconti has been called one of the most important producers in the history of rock by some of the most influential music critics. He has produced hits with artists such as David Bowie, The Moody Blues, T.Rex and Thin Lizzy, and most recently with Morrissey, Kaiser Chiefs and Angélique Kidjo for her groundbreaking Grammy winning album, “Djin Djin.” He was recently honored with the coveted Joe Meek Award for Innovation in Production at the 2011 Music Producers Guild Awards in London.

At the Soho House New York “Curation of Music” event, Visconti played many of the top 10 hits he has produced over the years, while sharing stories that relate to the music and the sounds of the times in 1970’s London. The majority of the music were played on vinyl through a McIntosh SOHO System, allowing listeners to experience the full emotional impact of music heard through a McIntosh fine audio system.

McIntosh’s Vice President for Sales and Marketing Linda Passaro noted: “McIntosh is thrilled to have Tony Visconti be a part of our ongoing series of listening events co-hosted with John Varvatos. Tony’s extensive resume and incredible artistry as producer, arranger and musician made the evening very memorable for everyone. We’re looking forward to even more enlightening listening events in the future, all with the goal of conveying our passion for quality sound to the next generation of music lovers.”

McIntosh and John Varvatos began their partnership last year, when the company began offering select McIntosh audio products in renowned John Varvatos boutiques in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The brands came together because of a shared passion for music and fine audio reproduction.

John Varvatos grew up in Detroit – the music melting pot of America – where Motown, rock & roll, blues, jazz, and punk melded together in unforgettable period of music history. At an early age John was exposed to defining musicians including The Who, Led Zeppelin, Detroit’s own MC5, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, and The Stooges. The creative spirit, electricity and edginess intrinsic in the personal style of these rock ‘n’ roll icons inspired John at an early age, and influenced the evolution of his eclectic sensibility.

“Music is a driving force in my life. It gives me energy, excitement, stimulus, and inspiration,” states Mr. Varvatos.

The Soho House events underscore McIntosh’s long history and reputation among many of the world’s most renowned musical artists and producers.

Paradigm Introduces Monitor Series 7 Speakers

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Research-fueled acoustic enhancements, smaller footprints and a more streamlined aesthetic highlight updates made to Paradigm’s popular speaker series.

Toronto, Ontario – August 16, 2011 – Paradigm proudly announces Monitor Series 7 loudspeakers for music and home theater — a complete redesign of the lineup, technologically and aesthetically. While faithfully preserving the natural acoustic signature of Monitor Series speakers, this generation offers critical sonic refinements through the introduction of Paradigm Reference design and technology in spades. A cleaner, more linear aesthetic rounds out the new package.

Paul Wojciechowski, Manager of Product Development says: “The goal for Monitor Series 7 was to further improve acoustic integrity while presenting a more streamlined aesthetic within a (slightly) smaller footprint, particularly on the floor standing speakers and center channels. “7” is a direct response to today’s consumers’ desire for a good size without sacrificing good sound.” In a nutshell says Paul, “We wanted the highest possible performance in the smallest physical envelope while maintaining the important Paradigm affordability difference.”

Monitor Series 7 design highlights:

  • NEW! Self-aligning magnetic grille design. Honeycomb interior corner architecture ensures a more spacious and transparent sound since the new architecture prevents sound capture in grille corners … acoustic integrity remains in tact whether speakers are played with grilles on or grilles off.
  • NEW! Complete baffle redesign:
  • ¾˝ MDF baffles across the board for further increased solidity and cabinet resonance reduction; A cleaner, fastener-free front-panel aesthetic; Magnetic baffle design makes it easier to remove should servicing ever be necessary; Baffle has been FEA-optimized to remove resonances and vibrations and critically tuned to the rest of the cabinet.
  • NEW! Elegant plinth (base) provides stability for the narrower floor standing footprints and a stylistically cleaner, less intrusive alternative to outrigger feet.
  • NEW! 20% overall reduction in model footprints – floor standers and center channels.
  • NEW! Monitor 7 is a new size and a 3-driver model (vs. 4 drivers in previous iterations) covering the spectrum through a tweeter, mid/bass and bass driver with audible improvements in sensitivity and extension.
  • NEW! Monitor 11 is now the size of the original Monitor 9 v.6 but a 5-driver model (vs. 4 drivers in previous iterations) covering the spectrum through a tweeter, dedicated midrange driver and three bass drivers with audible improvements in sensitivity and extension
  • NEW! Two new center channels have been introduced to replace the original CC-190, CC-290 and
CC-390 – the new centers are known as Center 1 and Center 2 and both acknowledge acoustic refinements over earlier center channels including decreased footprints to better fit today’s a/v furniture sizes.
  • NEW! Monitor Surround 1 has replaced the ADP’s of the previous Monitor Series and Surround 2 featuring revised design and technology in keeping with the way sound is being mastered and mixed in today’s recording studios.

Trickle-Down Technology from Paradigm’s Reference lineups includes:

  • 1˝ S-PAL satin-anodized pure-aluminum dome tweeter (vs. titanium in earlier versions):
    • Waveguide design offers improved high-frequency dispersion
    • Mesh guard offers added protection for the dome tweeter
  • S-PALsatin-anodized pure-aluminum cones (vs. injection-molded co-polymer in earlier versions):
    • New lightweight foam-rubber surround geometry (from Studio Series) with exceptional damping   properties and much higher excursion capability
    • New high-temperature voice coils (aluminum or copper) wound on Kapton® formers
    • Large ferrite magnets; super neodymium magnets in Monitor 11 dedicated midrange driver
  • Carbon-infused co-polymer polypropylene bass cones with motor structures tweaked as per bass/mid drivers
  • Greater sensitivity and deeper bass extension on floor standing models and center channels

Paradigm’s Director of Marketing, Mark Aling is most enthusiastic about this new lineup of value priced high-performance Paradigm speakers: “Monitor Series 7 goes further in terms of aesthetics, technology and design than almost any speaker series update we’ve done in our history. Our track record of producing high-value high-performance speakers is reinforced yet again with the launch of this fabulous new Monitor generation. For those who want real, concrete, audible value for their audio dollars, it won’t get better than this affordable new generation.”

Monitor Series 7 is available in Black Ash and a new Heritage Cherry finish. Surrounds are in Black. Model lineup and estimated US FMV pricing for the series is as follows:

Atom Monitor:        $199
Mini Monitor:          $279
Monitor 7:               $449
Monitor 9:               $599
Monitor 11:             $799

Zyklop and Minotaur Audiophile-Quality Power Cords Refine
Performances, Removing Noise and Adding Clarity, Transparency, Depth

PARKER, CO, July 8, 2011 — Aaudio Imports, a leading supplier of world-class high-end audio products, presents a pair of exceptional power products with unsurpassable performance qualities and build characteristics. The Zyklop and Minotaur Power Cords by Stage III Concepts, a world-class innovator in audio cable design, represent definitive statements in advanced, ultra-high performance interface technology.

Entirely handmade, the cables can be used with audio and video equipment of all types. They enhance the performance aspects of almost every system, while removing artifacts and noise that subtly mask musical nuances. The Zyklop, for example, makes treble and midrange signals smoother and better defined, and increases bass depth, articulation, video contrast and sharpness.

Based in Pasadena, California, Stage III Concepts was established by Luis De La Fuente in 1996. From the start, Stage III has been an innovator in the design of world-class audio cables and the first company to offer a variety of advanced technologies in their design and fabrication. Aaudio Imports is Stage III’s North America and Global distributor.

The A.S.P. Reference Zyklop Zero Distortion Audio Power Cord
The Zyklop Power Cord represents the upper limit for linear, silent, unrestricted power delivery for the ultra-high performance interface technology found in top audio and video components. Enhancing almost every performance aspect, it makes treble and midrange signals smoother and better defined, and increases bass depth and articulation, and video contrast and sharpness. It also removes artifacts and noise that mask fine music and image details.

The IEC and mains plugs use pure copper and silver electrical contacts with a massive conductor array delivering extremely low resistance, making it especially well suited for power amplifiers, where current demands can fluctuate quickly and drastically.

The cords employ 8 palladium/silver AeroStrand Ultra™ conductors for each polarity in a tubular helix geometry, and an air dielectric with FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) Teflon® air-tubes. Stage III’s high-efficiency AeroStrand conductors offer lower resistance and better heat dissipation than traditional stranded cords.

The Zyklop’s radiation-proof shielding uses an exclusive High Density Alloy foil plus nickel-plated copper braid, with individually protected ground, positive and negative conductors. The multi-layer construction includes a silica/ceramic/ferrite mechanical damping and shielding layer.

The cords use exclusive Hyperion Ceramic plugs with silver/copper alloy electrical contacts, cryogenically tempered and plated with palladium. Carbon fiber plug housings, also custom-made and polymer-filled, help eliminate external vibrations

Zyklop Zero Distortion Audio Power Cords are available now from Stage III dealers at a suggested price of $6,000 for 1.5 meters with each additional 0.5 meter costing $2,300. Discounts are available on a sliding scale ranging from 6 to 24 percent, depending on amount

The A.S.P. Reference Minotaur Extreme Audio Power Cord
Minotaur Audio Power Cords were designed to deliver the superb attributes of the Zyklop Zero Distortion Cord in a more compact, flexible, affordable format. It is better suited for all types of audio and video equipment that have less demanding power requirements, and that benefit from precise, linear and silent current delivery.

The Minotaur power cables employ 6 AeroStrand Ultra conductors with a palladium/silver alloy for each polarity in a large tubular helix geometry with alternating positive and negative conductors, an air dielectric, and FEP Teflon air tubes. The radiation-proof shielding uses an exclusive High Density Alloy foil plus nickel-plated copper braid, with an individually protected ground. The multi-layer construction includes a silica/ceramic/ferrite mechanical damping layer.

The cords use exclusive Hyperion Ceramic plugs with silver/copper alloy electrical contacts, cryogenically tempered and plated with palladium. Carbon fiber plug housings, also custom-made and polymer-filled, help eliminate external vibrations

Minotaur Extreme Audio Power Cords are available now from Stage III dealers at a suggested price of $4,000 for 1.5 meters with each additional 0.5 meter costing $1,100. Discounts are available on a sliding scale ranging from 6 to 24 percent, depending on amount.
