KEF T Series Flat Panel Speakers Named CEA Mark of Excellence Award Finalist

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

KEF, the renowned manufacturer of innovative, reference-quality loudspeakers, has announced the new T Series Flat Panel Loudspeaker line has been named a finalist for “Speaker of the Year” by the 2011 CEA TechHome Mark of Excellence Award committee.

As one of the thinnest high performance home theater and flat panel audio systems, the KEF T Series complements today’s stylish flat panel televisions and offers serious audiophile quality sound from exceptionally thin speakers.

The CEA Mark of Excellence Awards program recognizes the best in home electronics products, services and installed technology. Winners of this year’s award will be announced at the CEA Mark of Excellence Dinner Reception held Friday, March 18 at EHX 2011 in Orlando, Fla.

“We are proud to have the CEA Mark of Excellence Awards program recognize the truly unique design of the T Series,” said Alec Chanin, president of KEF America. “The T Series was designed to deliver superior sound in the form of a low-profile, ultra-thin flat panel speaker. By combining KEF’s legendary sound with this innovative design, we’ve developed the perfect flat panel loudspeaker for virtually any setting.”

The new T Series combines two landmark KEF innovations: a radical new ultra-low profile bass and midrange driver, and a large, fully vented new tweeter. Both the drivers and tweeter are incorporated into cabinets only 35mm deep, delivering true high-fidelity sound in a thin speaker that perfectly complements the aesthetics of the latest flat screen TVs. Sweet and pure midrange performance is assured by a new large diaphragm tweeter developed directly from the Concept Blade loudspeaker project.

The T Series also features KEF’s innovative Selecta-mount system which uses a clever internal connecting system to automatically adjust the crossover depending on how the loudspeaker is mounted, giving users the freedom to place the loudspeakers wherever they want and still enjoy great sound.

Judged by independent systems integrators, manufacturers, consultants and members of the media, the CEA panel recognizes the industry’s most outstanding products across 31 product categories, including home theater speakers.

Attendees to EHX 2011 can demo the T Series at the KEF Booth 1101A.

Pro Audio Technology Broadens Presence In CI Market With Affordable Options For Distributed Audio And Media Rooms

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Huntington Beach, CA (January 28, 2011) – Building on the success of its initial high-output in-wall loudspeakers, Pro Audio Technology (PRO) has expanded its offering of designer-friendly products to include new in-wall, in-ceiling and subwoofer models. Featuring professional components and DSP optimization, the new models bring PRO’s unique high-output performance to a lower price point than previously available.

The SCRS-5iw in-wall loudspeaker joins a ¾-inch compression driver to a PRO-designed elliptical horn for broad dispersion of high frequency energy. Its 5-inch woofer employs a powerful ferrite magnet with an oversized voice-coil, resulting in a high-sensitivity design capable of output levels of 110dB and a dynamic range typically associated with larger floor standing loudspeakers. Measuring only 3 7/8-inch deep, the SCRS-5iw installs easily in a standard 2 x 4 stud bay.

The SCRS-25iw ceiling loudspeaker integrates the drivers of the SCRS-5iw in a dual woofer configuration providing greater sensitivity and higher maximum output level of approximately 115dB. Functionality is enhanced by an angled baffle design – ideal for applications where directing sound toward a specific listening position is desirable. The all-metal construction provides robust build-quality commensurate with the product’s bulletproof performance and includes a back-box that easily fits between 12-inch on-center joists.

To compliment their full-range speakers, PRO is introducing two new subwoofers. The LFC-12im features a highly specialized 12-inch woofer in a shallow enclosure engineered for easy retrofit installation in a traditional 2 x 4 stud bay. A powerful neodymium motor and huge 5-inch voice-coil deliver deep, tuneful bass at output levels belying the LFC-12im’s unobtrusive size (115dB max output). For more demanding applications, PRO’s new LFC-14sm high-impact floor-standing subwoofer employs a proprietary long throw 15-inch driver housed in a compact enclosure. A black textured paint finish is standard. Wood veneer is available at an up-charge.
Each product is engineered for simple retrofit installation, requiring only minutes to install and all in-wall and in-ceiling models come with a bezel-less, paintable metal grille. Like other PRO products, the new loudspeaker models are designed for bi-amp operation using the company’s DSP-driven digital amplifier technology to maximize performance. Passive (single amp) operation will also be available.

Pricing is available through authorized PRO dealers.

Aperion Audio Sets Home Theater Surround Speakers Free with a Wireless Plug and Play System

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

The Aperion Zona™ Wireless Surround Speaker System Lets Enthusiasts and Installers Put Surround Sound Wherever They Want It

Portland, OR, September 23, 2010 – Aperion Audio, a direct-to-consumer maker of award-winning home theater speaker systems, ushers in the Aperion Zona Wireless Surround Speaker System at CEDIA Expo 2010. Aperion’s Zona brings reliable audiophile-grade surround sound to speaker locations where running wires is unsightly, difficult or impossible. The Aperion Zona Wireless Surround Speaker System overcomes these challenges using proven digital wireless technology that connects automatically when turned on. Home theater enthusiasts and custom installers can simply place the speakers where they want, plug them into a power outlet and instantly play high-fidelity sound.

Although surround sound for home theaters debuted years ago, homeowners often leave the surround or rear speakers unconnected to eliminate wires snaking around the room. But home theater buffs know they’re missing out on the full surround sound experience. “About one out of every four people we consult with asks if we make wireless surround speakers,” says Jason Hicks, Home Theater Guru at Aperion Audio. “Until now, we didn’t have a solution. We would’ve happily recommended other existing products, but they typically suffer from poor fidelity, unreliable connections or complexity, and that wouldn’t be acceptable for our customers. I’m excited that our product team has come up with a self-contained, high-end wireless system that lets home theater enthusiasts add surround sound wherever they want—no matter who manufactured their speaker system.”

Aperion designed the Zona speakers to work aesthetically and sonically with all home theater speaker systems. In addition, the Aperion Zona speakers can double as a wireless solution for music stored on personal computers or laptops. Plugging the Aperion Zona transmitter into the PC’s USB port automatically sends sound to Zona speakers located up to 150 feet away.

The Aperion Zona Speaker System consists of a compact wireless transmitter and two two-way powered speakers with tuned port and built-in wireless receivers. The transmitter connects to the Surround Pre-Out jacks of an AVR and the speakers link automatically when plugged in. Once connected, the system produces uncompressed 16 bit/48 kHz CD-quality audio.

Pricing, Availability and Warranty:
The Aperion Zona Wireless Surround Speaker System (two speakers, one transmitter) is priced at $499. Pre-orders are now being accepted, and the system is expected to ship on October 25, 2010. The One (1)-year limited warranty covers all defects in material and workmanship.

Triton™ Two Tower Loudspeaker

Thursday, September 16th, 2010
Press Contact: Sandy Gross

Triton Two Tower Loudspeaker

The Triton Two Tower is a high-performance loudspeaker with a built-in powered subwoofer. It is designed for superb performance in both high quality two channel stereo systems as well as in multi-channel home theater and music systems. Their sleek, elegantly curved and tapered design is important from both a styling as well as a performance perspective. The gorgeous piano black finish and compelling cutting-edge styling speaks for itself. However, additionally, the very narrow front baffle contributes significantly to Triton’s exceptional 3D imaging capability, which is especially important when used in 3D home theaters.

The built-in powered subwoofer section incorporates a GoldenEar designed 1200 watt DSP controlled digital amp to drive two front-mounted quadratic 5”x9” long-throw subwoofer bass drivers which are coupled to two side-mounted quadratic 7”x10” planar infrasonic radiators. The amp has a PLD (Programmable Logic Device)  based state machine with a 278nS update time to manage a myriad of functions including soft-clipping, DC offset  control, output-stage anti-saturation protection and discrete multi-band limiting. Intrinsic THD is extremely low so very little negative feedback is required thus ensuring optimum transient performance.

There are two 4.5” GoldenEar-designed cast-basket high-definition bass/midrange drivers which are arrayed in a D’Appolito configuration around the tweeter. The drivers incorporate a unique Multi-Vaned Phase Plug (MVPP) as well as a proprietary computer optimized cone topology that helps them to achieve smooth linear response extending beyond 20 kHz. Even though they are crossed over at 3.5 kHz, the extended bandwidth and smooth resonant-free response well beyond their crossover point helps them to achieve near ideal performance in the range in which they are utilized.

The high frequency driver is a proprietary High Velocity Folded Ribbon (HVFR™) design. The tweeter diaphragm is a high temperature film, which is folded like an accordion and positioned within an intense neodymium magnetic field. Unlike more conventional dome or ribbon tweeters which push the air, the HVFR develops higher pressure and velocity by squeezing the air out between the pleats of the diaphragm. The result is better impedance matching to the air in the room with greater control, smoother more extended response and dramatically improved dynamic range.

Dimensions:                      48” tall x 5.25” wide (at the front), 7.5” wide (at the back) x 15” deep (cabinet)

Rec. amplifier power:      20-500 watts per channel

Frequency response:       16 Hz – 35 kHz.

Retail price (USD):           $1,249.99/ea.

PHC to Unveil DSP Programmable Amp at CEDIA

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Huntington Beach, CA (September 08, 2010) – Professional Home Cinema (PHC) will unveil the production models of its new PMA-Series Programmable Modular Amplifiers at CEDIA EXPO, redefining the roll of the power amplifier in high performance audio systems.

Each PMA amplifier utilizes a four-channel mainframe driven by a proprietary dealer programmable DSP engine. The DSP front end includes digital crossover filters for all PHC loudspeaker models and easy to use system set-up and calibration abilities. Energy efficient Class-D amplification is provided via ICEpower®, supplying up to 4000 watts in a single 2-RU chassis weighing a mere 20 pounds.

The PMA-Series are the first products to introduce ultra-high resolution wide-band FIR (Finite Impulse Response) digital equalization to loudspeaker processing for the home environment. This cutting edge technology results in final loudspeaker acoustic response an order of magnitude beyond that currently achievable through conventional passive or active methods.

As easy to operate as to install, each PMA amplifier is programmed via a custom Windows® Utility and GUI, providing a user-friendly interface to the installer. System programming and calibration is performed via a series of intuitive drop down menus offering correction for speaker placement behind screens and fabrics, placement near multiple room boundaries, and individual channel gain. An LCD display mounted in the front panel provides real time feedback for each channel during system setup; including power module identification, DSP programming, and EQ and gain settings. Signal present, and clip indicators are provided on the rear panel. A diagnostic noise generator and looping outputs are also included.

PHC’s uncompromising approach to product engineering has produced a full range of loudspeaker systems capable of reproducing commercial cinema output levels with unrestricted dynamics, and a sophisticated line of DSP driven amplifiers boasting the power levels needed to provide true-to-life performance for music and film. The result is dynamic and articulate sound that simply cannot be achieved with conventional consumer audio systems.

The PMA-Series will begin shipping in quantity in the first quarter of 2011.

Procella Audio and Epic Home Cinema to Build THX Certified Screening Room on CEDIA Expo Floor

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Procella Audio, Epic Home Cinema and THX Combine Forces to Present the First Ever Full-blown THX Certified Screening Room on a Tradeshow Floor

- THX® Certified Screening Room* is located at the Procella Audio booth 4172 on the CEDIA Expo floor

- Designed and constructed to THX specifications by Epic Home Cinema

- Procella’s flagship THX Approved speaker system makes its CEDIA debut in the THX Certified Screening Room

- Epic Home Cinema to showcase their unique advanced acoustical and aesthetic design and build services

- Room features THX Certified and THX Approved products from Runco, Integra, QSC Audio, Meridian and Stewart Filmscreen

Venice, Calif. and Atlanta, Georgia – September 8, 2010 – Procella Audio, manufacturer of high-performance high-output speaker systems for home and professional cinema and music applications, announced today that the Procella Audio booth at the upcoming CEDIA Expo will feature a THX Certified Screening Room* designed and constructed by Epic Home Cinema. Exclusive presentations for attending media are scheduled for 10 AM and 2 PM on Thursday, September 23.

The THX Certified Screening Room, showcasing Procella Audio’s flagship speaker system, is  designed to the same exacting standards as professional facilities. Initial construction began offsite by Epic Home Cinema of Marietta, Georgia. Before the show, the room will be dismantled, moved to the CEDIA Expo floor, and rebuilt by the Epic team. Once complete, the room will be tested by THX to earn the highly coveted THX certification for residential Screening Rooms.

In order to earn THX certification, residential screening rooms must closely mirror the acoustic performance of a full-blown commercial theater or professional studio. The room itself must meet THX standards for room design and construction, including room dimensions, acoustical environment, sound isolation and viewer sight lines. Additionally, all audio and video components must have either THX Approval or THX certification, and the completed room must pass a final evaluation. THX participates in the entire process, from initial design through the  construction phase, and ultimately verifies system performance through a battery of measurements performed onsite by THX engineers.

All audio and video components used in the CEDIA Expo room are either THX Certified for home use or THX Approved for professional studios and cinemas. In addition to Procella, the room will feature products from Stewart Filmscreen, Runco, QSC Audio Products, Meridian and Integra.

The Procella models used in the theater include three active P815s for screen channels, six passive P8 speakers for the surround channels, and two P18 active subwoofers in the baffle wall. Three additional P10 active subwoofers are located in the side and back walls and used as balancing subwoofers. The P815, P8 and P18 have all earned THX Approval for integration into professional facilities, including THX Approved Screening rooms and pm3 rooms (Professional Multichannel Mixing and Monitoring).

“As a manufacturer introducing loudspeakers to the CEDIA audience at Expo, a THX Certified screening room is a dream environment,” said Procella director Chuck Back.  Demonstrating speakers at a trade show, whether in a booth, a so-called sound room or a hotel suite, invariably results in frustration due to poor acoustics and high ambient sound levels. Having a properly designed and built room means that attendees and potential customers will be able to accurately evaluate and fully appreciate the performance of Procella speakers. Having previously worked with Epic Home Cinema and THX, I can say their quality of work is unsurpassed.”

”THX Certification ensures that a screening room reproduces exactly what the director intended. Since we have built a THX-certified home theater, we know the amount of time and effort it takes to accomplish this.  With the stringent standards and specifications of THX, every aspect of a screening room is inspected and evaluated.  Starting with the components, which is exemplified by the incredible performance of Procella Audio and finishing with the optimized acoustical room design, build and calibration, the director’s vision is brought to life.  Many home theater companies may promise a high end theater, but THX Certification is the only way to be sure that the final product meets the quality initially promised to the homeowner. The chance to produce this at the CEDIA Expo, and the opportunity to share this with all the attendees is quite an honor,” stated Epic Home Cinema’s Greg Dawkins.

”We applaud Epic Home Cinema and Procella Audio for taking on the challenge of designing a THX Certified Screening Room at CEDIA Expo,” said Andrew Poulain, of the THX Studio and Cinema team. “Meeting the THX standards for acoustic performance and sound isolation is next to impossible on a tradeshow floor. The result of this collaboration is testament to the design talent of Epic and the performance capabilities of Procella Audio and all of the other THX partners involved.”

Editors and writers unable to attend the media presentations are encouraged to contact Procella to set up private appointments during show hours.

*THX certification pending final testing by THX.

DEFINITIVE TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCES ALL NEW BIPOLAR SUPERTOWERS® WITH MATCHING CENTER AND SURROUND MODELS

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Nine new products are complete ground-up redesigns, introduced to dealers at CEProLive! virtual trade show

BALTIMORE, June 17, 2010 – Definitive Technology today announced for fall delivery four new models of Bipolar Series SuperTower® floor-standing wood-enclosure loudspeakers with built-in subwoofers; three new matching center speakers, two of which feature built-in powered woofers; and two new matching bipolar surround speakers. The nine new models replace 11 older SKUs. Every part of every new model has been redesigned and improved for dramatic upgrades in appearance, functionality and performance. The new BP product line will be available initially only in the United States, Canada and most Latin American markets; versions for Europe and Asia will follow in 2011.

Definitive launched its business 20 years ago with a single model of bipolar loudspeaker with speakers on the front and rear panels of the enclosure to radiate sound in an omnidirectional pattern for more life-like imaging. In 1995 Definitive pioneered the concept of “powered towers” by incorporating powered subwoofers into Bipolar series floor-standing speakers dubbed “SuperTowers.” The new models represent the third generation of SuperTowers and make use of Definitive’s most advanced technologies, including a new patent-pending approach to bipolar speaker design called Forward Focused Bipolar Array, which combines the huge, life-like imaging benefits of bipolar designs with the pinpoint localization of soloists of traditional forward radiating speakers. All four floor-standing models utilize all new midrange and woofer drivers, tweeters, amplifiers and enclosure construction for a total makeover in appearance and performance. (more…)
