Paradigm Introduces Monitor Series 7 Speakers

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Research-fueled acoustic enhancements, smaller footprints and a more streamlined aesthetic highlight updates made to Paradigm’s popular speaker series.

Toronto, Ontario – August 16, 2011 – Paradigm proudly announces Monitor Series 7 loudspeakers for music and home theater — a complete redesign of the lineup, technologically and aesthetically. While faithfully preserving the natural acoustic signature of Monitor Series speakers, this generation offers critical sonic refinements through the introduction of Paradigm Reference design and technology in spades. A cleaner, more linear aesthetic rounds out the new package.

Paul Wojciechowski, Manager of Product Development says: “The goal for Monitor Series 7 was to further improve acoustic integrity while presenting a more streamlined aesthetic within a (slightly) smaller footprint, particularly on the floor standing speakers and center channels. “7” is a direct response to today’s consumers’ desire for a good size without sacrificing good sound.” In a nutshell says Paul, “We wanted the highest possible performance in the smallest physical envelope while maintaining the important Paradigm affordability difference.”

Monitor Series 7 design highlights:

  • NEW! Self-aligning magnetic grille design. Honeycomb interior corner architecture ensures a more spacious and transparent sound since the new architecture prevents sound capture in grille corners … acoustic integrity remains in tact whether speakers are played with grilles on or grilles off.
  • NEW! Complete baffle redesign:
  • ¾˝ MDF baffles across the board for further increased solidity and cabinet resonance reduction; A cleaner, fastener-free front-panel aesthetic; Magnetic baffle design makes it easier to remove should servicing ever be necessary; Baffle has been FEA-optimized to remove resonances and vibrations and critically tuned to the rest of the cabinet.
  • NEW! Elegant plinth (base) provides stability for the narrower floor standing footprints and a stylistically cleaner, less intrusive alternative to outrigger feet.
  • NEW! 20% overall reduction in model footprints – floor standers and center channels.
  • NEW! Monitor 7 is a new size and a 3-driver model (vs. 4 drivers in previous iterations) covering the spectrum through a tweeter, mid/bass and bass driver with audible improvements in sensitivity and extension.
  • NEW! Monitor 11 is now the size of the original Monitor 9 v.6 but a 5-driver model (vs. 4 drivers in previous iterations) covering the spectrum through a tweeter, dedicated midrange driver and three bass drivers with audible improvements in sensitivity and extension
  • NEW! Two new center channels have been introduced to replace the original CC-190, CC-290 and
CC-390 – the new centers are known as Center 1 and Center 2 and both acknowledge acoustic refinements over earlier center channels including decreased footprints to better fit today’s a/v furniture sizes.
  • NEW! Monitor Surround 1 has replaced the ADP’s of the previous Monitor Series and Surround 2 featuring revised design and technology in keeping with the way sound is being mastered and mixed in today’s recording studios.

Trickle-Down Technology from Paradigm’s Reference lineups includes:

  • 1˝ S-PAL satin-anodized pure-aluminum dome tweeter (vs. titanium in earlier versions):
    • Waveguide design offers improved high-frequency dispersion
    • Mesh guard offers added protection for the dome tweeter
  • S-PALsatin-anodized pure-aluminum cones (vs. injection-molded co-polymer in earlier versions):
    • New lightweight foam-rubber surround geometry (from Studio Series) with exceptional damping   properties and much higher excursion capability
    • New high-temperature voice coils (aluminum or copper) wound on Kapton® formers
    • Large ferrite magnets; super neodymium magnets in Monitor 11 dedicated midrange driver
  • Carbon-infused co-polymer polypropylene bass cones with motor structures tweaked as per bass/mid drivers
  • Greater sensitivity and deeper bass extension on floor standing models and center channels

Paradigm’s Director of Marketing, Mark Aling is most enthusiastic about this new lineup of value priced high-performance Paradigm speakers: “Monitor Series 7 goes further in terms of aesthetics, technology and design than almost any speaker series update we’ve done in our history. Our track record of producing high-value high-performance speakers is reinforced yet again with the launch of this fabulous new Monitor generation. For those who want real, concrete, audible value for their audio dollars, it won’t get better than this affordable new generation.”

IOGEAR Audio Adapter Brings DTS Surround Sound to Stereo Headphones

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

The USB Theater Sound Xperience adapter with DTS technology provides a complete audio-processing package for simulating surround sound with stereo headphones or speakers.

Foothill Ranch, Calif. – July 6, 2011 – IOGEAR, a leader in convergence through connectivity products, announces the USB Theater Sound Xperience (GUADT51), the first USB audio adapter with DTS® Surround Sensation | Headphone technology. Connecting directly to a computer’s USB 2.0 port, the IOGEAR USB Theater Sound Xperience simulates a surround sound experience on stereo headphones or speakers.

Utilizing a transparent vacuum tube-style design — a classic look for audio enthusiasts — the USB Theater Sound Xperience takes two-channel (stereo) audio and processes it with DTS Surround Sensation | Headphone technology to give the effect of sounds occurring outside the boundaries of two channels. Audio cues such as special frequencies, volume intensity and time delay help create the USB Theater Sound Xperience.

Audio that is already encoded in 5.1-channels gains more life with the LFE (low frequency effect) mixing, which enables low frequencies to be mixed with front channels for superior performance. The result is a three-dimensional wall of DTS virtual surround sound that exceeds the limitations of just two channels.

Three proprietary DTS Surround Sensation technologies are present in the IOGEAR USB Theater Sound Xperience:

  • Voice Clarification Technology: Enhances the signal clarity to improve the audio quality of dialog derived from Blu-ray Disc™ or standard DVD
  • Bass Enhancement Technology: Restores the perception of fundamental low-frequency tones by dynamically augmenting harmonics, yielding improved bass performance without the additional hardware costs of adding a subwoofer
  • Soundstage Expansion Technology: Broadens the soundstage and creates a phantom center channel for improved clarity and audio crispness

The USB Theater Sound Xperience offers music and movie modes that optimize the listening experience for music or dialogue and sound effects driven content. Two 3.5mm jacks are provided for stereo microphone-in and stereo headphone-out connection.

“Consumers who use their computers for watching DVDs and listening to music can provide a significant boost to audio performance with the IOGEAR USB Theater Sound Xperience,” said Bill Nguyen, senior marketing manager for IOGEAR. “Sometimes having five speakers or $500 headphones is not practical, so we created a surround sound alternative.”

Brian Towne, executive vice president and chief operating officer, DTS, Inc., added, “Simply put, sound matters to consumers who are enjoying content across many devices, especially their computers. With the recent availability of IOGEAR’s USB audio adapter, consumers will finally experience the immersive and spacious sound that they’ve always wanted from their PC devices.”

The USB Theater Sound Xperience retails for $39.95 US MSRP and is available from Shop.IOGEAR.com, Amazon.com and other online retailers now.

MartinLogan Theos Electrostatic Loudspeaker Now Available

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Descended from the acclaimed CLX loudspeaker, Theos features advanced XStat electrostatic technology along with greater bass performance, more visual transparency and flexible set-up options.

Lawrence, KS – May 23, 2011 – MartinLogan, The Great American Speaker Company, announces it is now shipping Theos; the most affordable hand-built electrostatic speaker with real wood finishes and custom bi-wire capable binding posts. Theos features a passive 8-inch high excursion woofer and an ultra-low turbulence down-firing bass port providing detailed bass down to 43Hz. New hand-rubbed, real wood finishes and flexible set-up options also enhance the Theos appeal.

The 9.2-inch wide by 44-inch tall XStat electrostatic transducer (speaker panel) on the Theos required careful mechanical engineering to achieve MartinLogan’s distinct 30-degree controlled dispersion pattern. To accomplish this, MartinLogan engineers reduced the gauge thickness of Theos’s steel stators, which not only achieves the desired arc, but also drastically increases the visual transparency of the panel.

Borrowing from the name of MartinLogan’s Chief Audio Technologist, Joe Vojtko, the Theos uses Advanced Vojtko Filtering. This proprietary audiophile quality network is hand-built using precision point-to-point wiring, polypropylene capacitors, massive air-core coils, and a custom wound toroidal audio transformer.

Theos also features a fully passive woofer in a bass reflex design and custom bi-wire capable binding posts giving audio enthusiasts the highest level of flexibility in amplifier selection and connectivity—from single wired solid state systems to vertical or horizontal bi-amplified tube installations. For ease of installation, Theos also features a low-voltage DC power supply that eliminates the need for a traditional, heavy IEC power cord.

Theos’ state-of-the-art features include:

• CLS XStat electrostatic transducer

• Ultra rigid AirFrame

• Fully passive design

• 8-inch aluminum cone woofer in a bass reflex design

• Precision built Vojtko crossover network boasting advanced ML topology

• Custom bi-wire toolless binding posts

• Custom ETC spikes

• Real wood finish options

Initial shipments of Theos will be offered in three hand-rubbed real-wood finishes including black ash, dark cherry, and zebrawood. Custom finishes are also available through authorized dealers.

US retail price is $4,995 per pair for standard finishes.

MartinLogan Offers Reward for Audio Related Questions

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

The Great American Speaker Company is giving away three pairs of the new ElectroMotion ESL speakers as part of a contest called, “Ask Professor Vojtko.”

Lawrence, KS – April 12, 2011 – In an effort to promote better understanding of audio technology and set-up, MartinLogan is running a contest from April 1 to May 30 encouraging people to submit questions to Chief Audio Technologist Joe Vojtko who will provide answers in a video response. Questions will be voted on and the top three question askers will earn a pair of ElectroMotion ESL speakers.

The word “Votjko” is more than just the last name of an audio genius. “Professor” Joe Vojtko has actually been a part of the MartinLogan engineering team for over 20 years, his name immortalized in product cut sheets around terms like proprietary Vojtko filtering technology and Vojtko crossover topology. Joe Vojtko’s DNA is in every MartinLogan electrostatic speaker shipped.

What’s the best location for a subwoofer in a 15 x 15 square room with a 5.1 speaker arrangement? How high on the wall should I mount my bookshelf speakers? What’s the difference between an electrostatic and a cone-based speaker? These are common questions that a local Best Buy rep may not have an answer to since high-fidelity audio performance is dependent on a myriad of factors, something MartinLogan engineers know better than most. Professor Vojtko’s responses will offer insight into the pursuit of sonic perfection.

Participation in the contest is 100% free and easy with no purchase required. Those who are interested can browse over to the Ask Professor Vojtko page on the MartinLogan website where they can submit and vote on the top questions (up to once per day) for Professor Vojtko to answer. Winners will be notified by phone or email from information provided during the submission process.

A video example of how Professor Vojtko will answer questions is available on the MartinLogan Youtube channel: Professor Vojtko, Episode 1 – Crossover and Amp Ratings.
