PHC to Unveil DSP Programmable Amp at CEDIA

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Huntington Beach, CA (September 08, 2010) – Professional Home Cinema (PHC) will unveil the production models of its new PMA-Series Programmable Modular Amplifiers at CEDIA EXPO, redefining the roll of the power amplifier in high performance audio systems.

Each PMA amplifier utilizes a four-channel mainframe driven by a proprietary dealer programmable DSP engine. The DSP front end includes digital crossover filters for all PHC loudspeaker models and easy to use system set-up and calibration abilities. Energy efficient Class-D amplification is provided via ICEpower®, supplying up to 4000 watts in a single 2-RU chassis weighing a mere 20 pounds.

The PMA-Series are the first products to introduce ultra-high resolution wide-band FIR (Finite Impulse Response) digital equalization to loudspeaker processing for the home environment. This cutting edge technology results in final loudspeaker acoustic response an order of magnitude beyond that currently achievable through conventional passive or active methods.

As easy to operate as to install, each PMA amplifier is programmed via a custom Windows® Utility and GUI, providing a user-friendly interface to the installer. System programming and calibration is performed via a series of intuitive drop down menus offering correction for speaker placement behind screens and fabrics, placement near multiple room boundaries, and individual channel gain. An LCD display mounted in the front panel provides real time feedback for each channel during system setup; including power module identification, DSP programming, and EQ and gain settings. Signal present, and clip indicators are provided on the rear panel. A diagnostic noise generator and looping outputs are also included.

PHC’s uncompromising approach to product engineering has produced a full range of loudspeaker systems capable of reproducing commercial cinema output levels with unrestricted dynamics, and a sophisticated line of DSP driven amplifiers boasting the power levels needed to provide true-to-life performance for music and film. The result is dynamic and articulate sound that simply cannot be achieved with conventional consumer audio systems.

The PMA-Series will begin shipping in quantity in the first quarter of 2011.

Procella Audio and Epic Home Cinema to Build THX Certified Screening Room on CEDIA Expo Floor

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Procella Audio, Epic Home Cinema and THX Combine Forces to Present the First Ever Full-blown THX Certified Screening Room on a Tradeshow Floor

– THX® Certified Screening Room* is located at the Procella Audio booth 4172 on the CEDIA Expo floor

– Designed and constructed to THX specifications by Epic Home Cinema

– Procella’s flagship THX Approved speaker system makes its CEDIA debut in the THX Certified Screening Room

– Epic Home Cinema to showcase their unique advanced acoustical and aesthetic design and build services

– Room features THX Certified and THX Approved products from Runco, Integra, QSC Audio, Meridian and Stewart Filmscreen

Venice, Calif. and Atlanta, Georgia – September 8, 2010 – Procella Audio, manufacturer of high-performance high-output speaker systems for home and professional cinema and music applications, announced today that the Procella Audio booth at the upcoming CEDIA Expo will feature a THX Certified Screening Room* designed and constructed by Epic Home Cinema. Exclusive presentations for attending media are scheduled for 10 AM and 2 PM on Thursday, September 23.

The THX Certified Screening Room, showcasing Procella Audio’s flagship speaker system, is  designed to the same exacting standards as professional facilities. Initial construction began offsite by Epic Home Cinema of Marietta, Georgia. Before the show, the room will be dismantled, moved to the CEDIA Expo floor, and rebuilt by the Epic team. Once complete, the room will be tested by THX to earn the highly coveted THX certification for residential Screening Rooms.

In order to earn THX certification, residential screening rooms must closely mirror the acoustic performance of a full-blown commercial theater or professional studio. The room itself must meet THX standards for room design and construction, including room dimensions, acoustical environment, sound isolation and viewer sight lines. Additionally, all audio and video components must have either THX Approval or THX certification, and the completed room must pass a final evaluation. THX participates in the entire process, from initial design through the  construction phase, and ultimately verifies system performance through a battery of measurements performed onsite by THX engineers.

All audio and video components used in the CEDIA Expo room are either THX Certified for home use or THX Approved for professional studios and cinemas. In addition to Procella, the room will feature products from Stewart Filmscreen, Runco, QSC Audio Products, Meridian and Integra.

The Procella models used in the theater include three active P815s for screen channels, six passive P8 speakers for the surround channels, and two P18 active subwoofers in the baffle wall. Three additional P10 active subwoofers are located in the side and back walls and used as balancing subwoofers. The P815, P8 and P18 have all earned THX Approval for integration into professional facilities, including THX Approved Screening rooms and pm3 rooms (Professional Multichannel Mixing and Monitoring).

“As a manufacturer introducing loudspeakers to the CEDIA audience at Expo, a THX Certified screening room is a dream environment,” said Procella director Chuck Back.  Demonstrating speakers at a trade show, whether in a booth, a so-called sound room or a hotel suite, invariably results in frustration due to poor acoustics and high ambient sound levels. Having a properly designed and built room means that attendees and potential customers will be able to accurately evaluate and fully appreciate the performance of Procella speakers. Having previously worked with Epic Home Cinema and THX, I can say their quality of work is unsurpassed.”

”THX Certification ensures that a screening room reproduces exactly what the director intended. Since we have built a THX-certified home theater, we know the amount of time and effort it takes to accomplish this.  With the stringent standards and specifications of THX, every aspect of a screening room is inspected and evaluated.  Starting with the components, which is exemplified by the incredible performance of Procella Audio and finishing with the optimized acoustical room design, build and calibration, the director’s vision is brought to life.  Many home theater companies may promise a high end theater, but THX Certification is the only way to be sure that the final product meets the quality initially promised to the homeowner. The chance to produce this at the CEDIA Expo, and the opportunity to share this with all the attendees is quite an honor,” stated Epic Home Cinema’s Greg Dawkins.

”We applaud Epic Home Cinema and Procella Audio for taking on the challenge of designing a THX Certified Screening Room at CEDIA Expo,” said Andrew Poulain, of the THX Studio and Cinema team. “Meeting the THX standards for acoustic performance and sound isolation is next to impossible on a tradeshow floor. The result of this collaboration is testament to the design talent of Epic and the performance capabilities of Procella Audio and all of the other THX partners involved.”

Editors and writers unable to attend the media presentations are encouraged to contact Procella to set up private appointments during show hours.

*THX certification pending final testing by THX.

GefenTV Auto Volume Stabilizer Makes Volume Levels Consistent Using Dolby Volume Technology

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

CHATSWORTH, CA – Connectivity solutions provider Gefen today announced that its GefenTV Auto Volume Stabilizer is now shipping. This device solves one of the most common complaints heard from consumers when watching television: a noticeable rise in volume levels during commercials. This solution eliminates that problem, keeping the volume the same throughout TV programs and commercials. It will also level the volume on different CDs and audio mixes. Everything is heard at a consistent level, improving the listening experience.

The GefenTV Auto Volume Stabilizer uses Dolby Volume technology that works with most audio/video and multimedia systems. A full-range audio experience is sustained, with low frequencies boosted and high frequencies adjusted to optimal levels the user sets.

Three inputs/outputs are provided for both analog (L/R) and digital (optical; coax) audio devices. All three inputs are switchable and live; users select which audio source will be adjusted. There is also a bypass feature allowing audio to pass through without adjustment.

The Auto Volume Stabilizer installs easily, and sits between the audio/video source and the A/V receiver or HDTV display. Users select their connected source, set the volume, and the Auto Volume Stabilizer maintains consistency throughout the experience.

When not in use, the Auto Volume Stabilizer moves to standby mode, which makes it a “green” product.

Contact: Nick Phillips, 877-274-6100 x116, nick@pakedge.com
Frank Doris / Media Relations, 631-645-5668, frankdoris@optonline.net

Foster City, CA – Pakedge Device & Software today announced it has been awarded a U.S. patent on its in-ceiling wireless access point design. Pakedge is the first company ever to be awarded a patent on an in-ceiling wireless access point (WAP), a device that expands the wireless connectivity of a home network, custom-installation audio/video system, security system or enterprise-class network.

Mounting a wireless access point in a ceiling can provide significant benefits. Wireless range can be increased and transmission/reception reliability improved by mounting a wireless access point in a ceiling, because of reduced interference from building and construction materials. In addition, an in-ceiling wireless access point offers increased installation options and convenience.

Pakedge U.S. patent number 7763797 covers the intellectual property relating to the mounting technology necessary to install wireless access points in a ceiling. It also describes the benefits of greater Wi-Fi range and better connection stability provided by an antenna array that is placed at an elevated location. Pakedge was the first company to develop an in-ceiling access point and subsequent patent in 2003.

A Pakedge in-ceiling WAP can be mounted in a variety of ways as either a retrofit or in new construction, in a ceiling as well as in a drywall installation. Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is used to eliminate the need for a dedicated power supply at the WAP location. As part of the patent design, a supplied wing bracket facilitates installation, and the cover of the Pakedge in-ceiling access point provides a clean, finished appearance. As an industry leader in developing wireless technology, Pakedge has used this intellectual property to develop its newest in-ceiling access point designs, which will make their debut this month.

Victor Pak, President and CEO of Pakedge, noted: “We are honored to receive the industry’s first-ever U.S. patent for an in-ceiling wireless access point. The patent reflects Pakedge’s commitment to offering innovative, problem-solving products that make life easier for custom installers and system integrators.”

Parasound Upgrades its Classic Halo JC 2 Preamp with Added Home Theater Bypass

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

The new Parasound Halo JC 2 BP allows audiophiles to use their high-end speakers and amplifiers for the left and right channels of a home theater system controlled by a surround receiver, or to switch back to stereo music under the no compromise control of the JC 2 BP’s stereo preamplifier circuits.

Press release with photos & specs:

SAN FRANCISCO (8/25/10) – Parasound, one of the audio industry’s top manufacturers of high-end audio components, has introduced a new version of the widely acclaimed, John Curl designed, Halo JC 2 stereo preamplifier. The new Parasound Halo JC 2 BP adds a home theater bypass function that allows this preamplifier and its companion power amplifier and speakers to be connected as the front left- and right-channels of a surround sound home theater system. The new configuration provides total performance and control in both modes without compromising the performance of either mode.

“When we started the JC 2 project I hugely underestimated how many people would want to blend a JC 2 into their surround system,” said Parasound’s president and founder, Richard Schram. “I put the idea to John Curl, and we eventually came up with a way to implement this without touching the L and R channel audio boards. The result is a perfect sonic duplicate of the original JC 2 with the added benefit of home theater bypass.”

The changes made to create the JC 2 BP included a modified potentiometer board and some clever new control software. Circuit board designer Carl Thompson revised the potentiometer board layout so that it is now equipped with four relays that short out the four-gang main volume control and both two-gang trim pots. Additional fixed resistors set the outputs to unity gain when the bypass mode is selected.

Any one or more of the JC 2 BP’s six inputs, including the two balanced inputs, can be assigned as a bypass input. A new front panel includes an amber Bypass LED to indicate when a selected input is also assigned the bypass function.

Parasound is including an entirely new and improved remote control handset with the JC 2 BP. In addition to fail-safe buttons to program the new bypass control function, its new shape and rubber coating improves stability over the previous model. Parasound has also been shipping JC 2s with this new remote control since July.

The Parasound Halo JC 2 BP will be available September 15 with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $4,500. Parasound will also offer a retrofit to existing JC 2 owners for $500, including return ground shipping in the US. This way there is no penalty for existing JC 2 owners who want to update to the bypass feature. The JC 2 will continue in the line at its original $4000 price.

About Parasound: Founded in 1981, Parasound Products, Inc., is a privately owned U.S. company that specializes in providing affordable audio and home theater components to the critical listener. Parasound’s products are available from quality audio/video retailers, and select custom installation specialists. For more information, visit www.parasound.com or call 415-397-7100.

International Broadcasters Conference (IBC) – Amsterdam (September 9, 2010) — Marvell (NASDAQ: MRVL), a worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, today announced the integration of the RVU protocol onto their ARMADA™ SoCs. Marvell, a member in the RVU Alliance, provides CPU and connectivity solutions for multiple entertainment platforms in the “Whole-Home.”
The first adoption by Marvell of the open standard RVU protocol begins with the ARMADA 1000 High Definition (HD) Media Processor System-on-a-Chip (SoC). Marvell’s low power ARMADA SoCs will be deployed in various consumer video devices including thin client set-top-boxes (STBs) for second and third TVs in the home.
“We are pleased that Marvell has joined a host of other silicon companies powering RVU’s vision of enabling consumers to access their entertainment content in a consistent manner on more devices in the home,” said Henry Derovanessian, president of the RVU Alliance and senior vice president at DIRECTV. “Inclusion of RVU technology across handsets, tablets and set-top box platforms will accelerate the availability of service provider content throughout the home with a comprehensive Remote User Interface (RUI) that allows for pixel-accurate representation of the user experience rendered by the service operator’s media server on thin clients. The RVU technology is at the forefront of the move to advanced in-home video networking solutions and we are glad to see Marvell adopting this pioneering technology.”
“The demands for home entertainment are rapidly expanding with 3D, streaming, multi-room TV and personal content consumption and the ARMADA 1000 with RVU protocol enables Pay TV operators to meet and exceed those consumer demands,” said Gaurav Shah, General Manager for the Digital Entertainment Business Unit at Marvell. “Bringing the RVU protocol to the low-power and scalable ARMADA 1000 HD media processor opens brand new levels of operator and consumer engagement, rapidly advancing the home entertainment experience.”
RVU is a client/server-based technology that allows the television content viewer to experience a consistent server-generated user interface, on various consumer electronics devices. The RVU protocol uses DLNA technology as a foundation.
Marvell’s client RVU support is demonstrable today, and will be working with various CE manufacturers on various platforms for production deployment in 2011. Marvell will demonstrate an RVU client solution based on the ARMADA 1000 SoC (88DE3010) at IBC (Hall 9, Booth 131).
