Sennheiser is recognized with Best of the Best Award from Robb Report

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Old Lyme, CT – June 2009 – Sennheiser is pleased to announce their newest premium headphone, the HD 800 has received a “Best of the Best” Award from Robb Report magazine in the Home Audio category.

Every June, Robb Report publishes its annual “Best of the Best” special issue, which represents the culmination of an entire year’s search for excellence. This special issue offers readers a selection of new products and services that illustrate the finest goods that the luxury world has to offer.

“The HD800 produces sound so crisp that all the intricate recording nuances become readily audible: the soft release of a flautist’s breath, the scratch of a bow along a violin string. Background noise never sounded so good,” said Bailey S. Barnard, assistant editor for Robb Report.

The HD 800 sets new standards with its innovative transducer technology. Measuring 56 mm, the transducer in the HD 800 is the largest that can currently be found in a dynamic headphone. In simple terms: the more transducer surface area that vibrates, the purer the headphone sounds at low frequencies.

The exterior design of the HD 800 perfectly reflects its outstanding sound quality: a puristic design language and a black/silver finish give the headphones a look of exclusive elegance, turning them into a true designer object. And all this is ‘Made in Germany’: the HD 800 was developed and designed at Sennheiser’s corporate headquarters in Wedemark, Germany. The new headphones will be manufactured there as well – with the usual meticulous attention to detail, build and quality.

Sound Performance of Coral Gables, FL, becomes Waterfall’s first U.S. Dealer

Carcès, France—July 2009—Waterfall Audio, renowned throughout Europe and Asia for its distinguished clear-glass loudspeakers, is now making a splash in the U.S. market. Sound Performance of Coral Gables, FL, which has been selling Waterfall Audio on special order since 2008 goes on record as being the company’s first official dealer in the USA. Not only that, they are the first dealer in the country in 2009 to sell the magnificent new flagship Niagara glass tower speakers which retail for $54,000 a pair.

Waterfall Audio has made a grand entrance into North America led by its tower glass loudspeakers, Victoria EVO and Iguasçu EVO. The stunning, three-way Victoria EVO, is named for one of the world’s most famous natural wonders, the eponymous falls in Zambia/Zimbabwe in Africa; and the two-way Iguasçu EVO is named for the falls on the border between Brazil and Argentina.

Waterfall speakers now include on-wall models and home theater systems made from a proprietary safety glass fabrication technique that creates seamless construction and invisible corners. The tower models feature cabling located under the base, at floor level, to preserve the dramatic, unprecedented visual impact. The speaker drivers and bases are machined from die-cast aluminum for quality and precision.

Waterfall Audio’s superb combination of design and performance is an ideal blend for Sound Performance who has been a pioneer in high-end audio and video custom installations in South Florida for thirty years. Many of their high profile projects include work for such icons as Madonna, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, and NFL Hall of Famers, Don Shula and Nick Buoniconti and many others. Their commercial projects include Miami’s very first 5-star property, Grand Bay Hotel along with its legendary Regines nightclub, back in 1983, right up to the city’s newest and most spectacular 5-star Regent Bal Harbour and One Bal Harbour luxury condominium, each filled throughout with Sound Performance-designed sound and AV systems that include a Lucasfilm THX movie theater.

Sound Performance Sales & Marketing Director Clive Eveden adds, “Sound Performance has always been renowned for its cutting edge products. We were one of only a handful of dealers nationwide to carry Nakamichi’s legendary Dragon turntables and cassette systems back in the early 80s; same with McIntosh’s 50th Anniversary vacuum tube power amps and Pioneer PETs. Without question, Waterfall Audio has come up with something seriously special with their new flagship Niagara’s, and surprisingly it has been the women who have first been drawn to the beauty of these speakers, followed by the men who have been distinctly impressed by their sound.”

PSB Introduces Completely New Image Series Speakers

Monday, July 20th, 2009

High-End Features Dramatically Rewrite the Rules for Performance, Value and Style on Newly Designed 8-Model Music and Cinema Series

CEDIA Expo 2009, Atlanta, GA, July 17, 2009 — PSB Speakers, globally renowned for nearly 40 years for its design and production of loudspeakers exhibiting the highest standards of performance and value at a broad array of price points, introduces a dramatically new edition of its successful Image Series speakers benefiting from top-level technology trickled down from the highly acclaimed Synchrony and Imagine Series. Many of the features that debuted in the flagship Synchrony Series in 2007, and were then introduced to the stylish Imagine Series in 2008, are now available in the all-new Image Series.

Long considered among the most versatile and affordable of PSB’s major speaker lines, Image Series speakers have been remodeled and equipped with many of the features and enhancements developed in recent years for PSB’s award-winning Synchrony and Imagine Series loudspeakers. Scaling the size of the whole Image project was a major objective. The new Image Series represents the final stage of a profound three-phase reconsideration of PSB product offerings in free-standing speakers that began with Synchrony, then moved to the Imagine Series. With the new Image Series, PSB again raises the traditional PSB virtues to new heights of performance and sophistication, whether judged technically or by rigorous standards of subjective evaluation.

The new Image Series consists of eight models, including two full-range tower designs, two compact monitors, two center-channel speakers, one bipole surround for side and rear locations, and one sub-compact monitor/surround. The models are based on six-, five- and four-inch woofer platforms that further extend the Image Series’ already broad range of applications and budgetary options. All the models share PSB’s recent advances as well as its obsessive dedication to performance, quality and value.

Like all PSB speakers, the new Image designs benefit from the world-class acoustical resources of Canada’s National Research Council in Ottawa, Canada. For more than 35 years PSB founder and design team chief Paul Barton has returned again and again to the NRC to conduct fundamental studies of loudspeakers and room acoustics in its anechoic chamber as well as vital subjective evaluations in its listening-studio facilities. Mr. Barton’s research at the NRC, which included an extensive three-year development project for Synchrony, played an important role in the design of the new Image Series.

Significant among the Image Series’ enhancements is its driver platform, which is based on what PSB developed for the Synchrony and Imagine Series. All the Image models share long-excursion, very high-output woofers resulting in compact designs with output capabilities as high as much larger traditional systems.

A highly accurate, one-inch titanium dome tweeter with ferrofluid and a very efficient neodymium magnet structure, borrowed from the Synchrony design portfolio, helps to extend output for effortless, airy top octaves and smooth, uncolored response. “The frequency response of the listening window over their operating range is within 1dB for every model in the new Image line,“ noted Barton.

The new Image Series also display an esthetic dimension that pulls design cues from the Imagine series. “We focused on softer shapes for the cabinets rather than a rigid boxy look,” said Barton. “We maintained the Image Series’ somewhat rounded front and back, but changed the shape slightly to make the speakers a little more organic-looking.”

Along with more robust baffles made from 1-1/8-inch thick MDF, a material usually reserved for more expensive models, the new Image speakers exhibit a highly finished look, with clean and soft, esthetically pleasing lines and no visible fasteners. Regardless of configuration, they comfortably integrate into today’s varied listening environments. Additional high-value features include PSB’s five-way gold-plated binding posts, adjustable feet with spikes, port covers and rubber levelers.

“Delivering high value has always been one of my passions,” said Paul Barton. “And the Image Series represents my best achievement.”

The Image T5 and T6 Towers
The Image Series’ two towers — the T5 and T6 — are slim floorstanding models 37 and 41 inches high that deliver full-bodied, technically refined sound with tonal, spatial and dynamic accuracy. The T5 is a dual woofer transitional two-and-a-half way design with identical 5-1/4-inch woofers and a one-inch titanium tweeter. The T6 is a three-way dual-cavity, dual-ported design with 6-1/2-inch woofers and a discrete 5-1/4-inch self-contained midrange driver. The T5 and T6 are rated up to 175 and 200 watts at 6 ohms, respectively. Many of these design features are similar to those in found in the award-winning Synchrony One design approach.

The woofers employ injection-molded diaphragms with a proprietary, clay/ceramic-filled polypropylene cone that uniquely optimizes stiffness, internal damping and low mass. The woofers’ magnetically neutral polycarbonate basket contributes additional stiffness, while its bullet-shaped phase-plug (borrowing from the Synchrony design) enhances linearity at higher frequencies.

“The T6 Tower is a three-way system similar in execution to the Synchrony One,” explained Barton. “Not only are the orientation and arrangement on the front baffle similar to that of the Synchrony One, the arrangement helps the in-phase lobe tilt up so that the speaker has a very similar voice whether the listener is sitting down or standing up.”

The T6 cabinet is also designed in a way similar to that of the Synchrony One,
in which each woofer is divided and ported in individual chambers. The T6 employs two separate chambers and ports, which eliminates such issues as standing waves inside the box.

“In dividing and individually porting the cabinet we address the problem of a standing wave inside the box found in many tall, slim speaker designs,” explained Barton. “Dividing the cavity into two smaller cavities eliminates the ability of a standing wave to set up inside the enclosure. Also, putting woofers in multiple positions reduces the first reflection phenomenon, minimizing the negative effects of the primary ‘floor bounce’ reflections, resulting in a much more accurate and tuneful bass performance in any setup.”

The Image B5 and B6 Monitors
The Images’ two monitors — the B5 and B6 — are ideal for multichannel deployments, 2.1 subwoofer/satellite systems, and main-channel use in smaller rooms or systems. They feature a single 5-1/4-inch and 6-1/2-inch speaker plus the one-inch tweeter in 12-1/2-inch and 14-inch high cabinets, respectively. They share the injection-molded, clay/ceramic-filled polypropylene designs of the Tower drivers, which also include dual magnets, polycarbonate baskets, and rubber surrounds. The monitors are rated up to 125 and 150 watts at 6 ohms, respectively.

The speakers also feature 40mm rear ports and, like the Towers, PSB’s sturdy multiway gold-plated binding posts that accept bare wire, lugs, banana plugs, open and closed spades, and enable bi-wiring and bi-amplification. Bi-wiring reduces interference by allowing the two channels to separate electronically when routed through an amplifier. Bi-amping allows the use of two amplifiers to separately power the woofer and the tweeter.

The Image B4 Sub-Compact Monitor/Surround
A smaller addition to the Image Series, the B4 is comprised of a new four-inch woofer and a one-inch titanium tweeter. Intended for Home Theater or multichannel applications, the two-way system fits in a cabinet only 5-1/4 inches wide by 9-1/8 inches high by 6-1/2 inches deep, making it as easy to place as a conventional bookshelf speaker. It shares the driver platform and design features of the larger models, and adds to the series’ broad appeal and flexibility. The compact size is ideal for today’s urban, modern decors.

The Image C4 and C5 Center Channels

The C4 and C5 Center Channel speakers deliver their two-way systems in a dual-woofer horizontal format. Engineered to maximize performance in multichannel applications, the C4 pairs two four-inch woofers with the one-inch titanium tweeter, while the C5 employs a pair of 5-1/4-inch woofers. The cabinets are only 5-1/4-inch and 7-1/8-inch high, making them easy to place near today’s legions of new flat-screen TVs.

The Image S5 Surround
Compact and versatile, the bipole S5 Surround performs admirably on a shelf or stand, or wall-mounted (hardware included). It joins a pair of 5-1/4-inch woofers with a pair of one-inch titanium tweeters, and is rated up to 150 watts at 6 ohms for maximum coverage and output. Its cabinet dimensions are 11-5/8 inches wide by 11-3/4 inches high by a mere 6-7/8 inches deep.

PSB’s new Image Series loudspeakers are available in a choice of black ash or dark cherry vinyl finishes. They are available now at the following manufacturer’s suggested U.S. prices, and can be seen with other outstanding PSB products at Booth 2926, Georgia Congress done, during CEDIA ‘09.

SI Screens Donates 100-Inch Motorized Projection Screen for TV’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Episode

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Austin, Texas, July 7, 2009 – SI (www.siscreens.com) is proud to announce that it has donated a TPM100 Theater Performance Motorized 100-inch projection screen for a recently aired episode of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The screen was installed by Media Design of Fort Worth, Texas.

“We are impressed beyond belief that companies like SI Screens have stepped-up to help deserving families,” says Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Senior Producer Diane Korman. “The project was a perfect fit for our companies to join forces and create an extreme home.”

According to ABC and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the Augustin family of Keller, Texas, lost their home and home-based not-for-profit photography studio in a flood. Amber Augustin started up her volunteer photography business, “Tiny Works of Heart,” which was inspired by the premature birth of her third child, son Lane. The challenge of Lane’s birth and the family’s emotional and financial struggles during this period inspired Amber to volunteer her time and talent as a photographer to taking pictures of babies born in the N.I.C.U. (neonatal intensive care unit). Many of the babies born in N.I.C.U. don’t survive, making time spent between parents and their fragile babies very precious. For that reason, Amber started a free service and mission called “Tiny Works of Heart” to give families a chance to professionally capture their time with their fragile child. She also volunteers a great deal of time with an established organization whose intent is to provide hope, comfort, memories and a sense of “normalcy” to the families during these tough times. For this project, SI Screens donated the TPM100 Theater Performance Motorized 100-inch projector screen.

“We were just devastated when the flood destroyed our home and studio,” said Amber Augustin. “In a very short period of time, all of our hard work was lost. Then, we were blessed by the wonderful people of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and all of the incredible companies who donated their time and products to help rebuild our home and ‘Tiny Works of Heart’ studio. The SI Screens TPM100 projection screen provides just a beautiful, detailed, grand sized image. We are so grateful to SI Screens and Media Design for the projection screen and their help. The families we work with deserve the very best and for them to see the pictures of their precious babies on a bigger than life medium is just a wonderful experience for them, and us.”

SI’s luxurious Performance Motorized projector screens are a revolutionary design that sets the standard for aesthetics and picture quality. Performance Motorized offers the “Super Flat” rigid screen tensioning system ensuring a perfect image from all projectors. Standard amenities include 12 volt trigger, IR / remote, and 24 inches of extra black drop, making the Performance Motorized the ultimate solution for any home theater or commercial application.

“When we were informed that Ty [Pennington] needed a projection screen for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s secret room we were ecstatic to help,” said Ryan Gustafson, SI Screens president. “When we heard the screen would be used to show off Amber Augustin’s photography for the ‘March of Dimes’ and ‘Tiny Works of Heart’, we were even more excited. For many families these pictures are treasured memories of their babies who had very brief lives. The photos, often as many as 1,200 per family, are all free. Now Amber has a large projection screen to show off her work!”

Each episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is self-contained and features a race against time on a project that would ordinarily take at least four months to achieve, involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who all have just seven days to totally rebuild an entire house – every single room, plus the exterior and landscaping. The lives of the lucky families are forever changed when they learn that they’ve been selected to have their home walls moved, their floors replaced and even their facades radically changed. The result should be a decorator’s delight…if it can be done in time.

For more information on the Reference Motorized Screen Series and SI Screens, visit the web at www.siscreens.com or call 512-832-6939.

Wisdom Audio Launches High-End, Powered Sage Series SCS “Suitcase” Sub at 2009 CEDIA Expo

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

CARSON CITY, Nev., July 6, 2009 Wisdom Audio (www.wisdomaudio.com), the leader in planar magnetic technologies, is proud to announce that it will launch its new Sage Series SCS “suitcase” subwoofer at the 2009 CEDIA Expo, held in Atlanta from Sept. 10-13 at the Georgia World Congress Center, booth SR-8.

The uncommon size and aspect ratio of the SCS allows it to be placed in areas where other subwoofers will not fit, offering installers a unique option. The freestanding SCS is based on the same woofer alignment concept employed in the Wisdom Audio S90i, offering similar performance benefits and, ideally, complementing the accompanying models within the Sage Series.

“Reaction to the sonic performance and subjective qualities of our [Sage Series] S90i in-wall subwoofer was so positive, we looked at making a smaller, powered version that could be used in-room when a CI solution was not possible,” explained Mark Glazier, Wisdom Audio president. “The new SCS can be used with any freestanding speakers but matches up particularly well with the outstanding transient detail, low distortion, and accurate timbre of our planar magnetic-based Sage Series models.”

The SCS is scheduled to ship in Q4 2009 with a MSRP of $4,000.00 (U.S.). Based on the complementary folded horn design of the S90i, the SCS is nicknamed the “Suitcase Sub” because of its outward physical characteristics, as it has a production size of 37in. x 22in. x 6in. The SCS is powered by a 300-watt internal amplifier and is capable of SPLs in excess of 120 dB @ 22 Hz. The dual 5in. x 7.5in. woofer design yields an equivalent active cone area of 12 inches.

“The unique ‘multi-port’ design allows for flexibility in how the SCS’ output is ported into the room,” commented David Graebener, executive vice president and principal systems designer for Wisdom Audio. “The uncommon shape of the SCS creates opportunities for installation in places where a cube subwoofer would not fit or be effective. We wanted to address all possible installation options and this created a design goal for the SCS’ output to be ported on any of three sides. We also wanted to take full advantage of the six-inch dimension, which allows the SCS to be placed under or behind furniture, such as a sofa or cabinets, so as to remain out of sight. This product is not only an excellent performing subwoofer, but also offers unprecedented installation flexibility.”

Added Glazier, “The SCS is the perfect complement to our solution-driven Sage models. It is a unique design that addresses a range of installation problems dealers have faced for years with conventional transducer alignments and cabinet shapes. We are pleased to add another creative design that helps our dealers better integrate systems into customers’ homes while achieving a superior level of performance.”

Now shipping, Wisdom’s complete Sage Series high-end architectural and freestanding speaker systems are at the forefront of Wisdom’s training and educational efforts. Wisdom Audio has recently brought to market more than 20 Sage Series models, encompassing in-wall, on-wall, and freestanding versions of most configurations ranging from 20 inches to 76 inches tall. As a result, the company needed to create an on-site facility in order to train and educate its dealers on multiple Sage Series configurations, including speakers, subwoofers, integrated Audyssey Laboratories™ room correction software, and dedicated electronics.
