NAD Introduces Powerful, Paradigm-Breaking M2 Direct Digital Amplifier

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Revolutionary Masters Series Amp Implements New Digital Correction Technology for Dynamic, Efficient, Musically Revealing Performance

SHARON, MA, May 26, 2009 — NAD Electronics, the highly regarded manufacturer of high-performance audio/video components, introduces the Masters Series M2 Direct Digital Amplifier, delivering in the culmination of a decade long research project a new level of amplifier performance. Immensely powerful, dynamic, efficient, and musically revealing, the M2 is a true digital amplifier that sets new benchmarks for both measurable performance and subjective musical quality.

Superior to any previous digital amplifier, the M2 can be thought of as a Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) that directly drives a loudspeaker, but with the same precision as the very best low-level DACs. The M2’s technology is far more sophisticated than the Class D analog amplifiers that are often erroneously referred to as ‘digital.’ In fact, the M2 is the first digital amplifier that can match the best linear amplifiers for low noise and distortion, delivering better than Class A sound with Class D efficiency. At the same time, the M2 is capable of delivering startling power, 250 Watts to each of two channels at 4 or 8 Ohms continuous power, and 500 Watts IHF Dynamic power.

NAD has long been a leader in amplifier technology, extending back to the late Seventies, and has been responsible for many groundbreaking innovations. NAD published a scientific paper in the 1980s defining the importance of Dynamic Power for an amplifier reproducing recorded music. This led directly to the Power Envelope, PowerDrive and Soft Clipping circuits. More recently NAD’s Director of Advanced Development, Bjorn Erik Edvardsen, has developed a unique Distortion Canceling Circuit and Adaptive Antisaturation Clamp (BEE Clamp) first introduced in the Masters Series amplifiers. NAD has also long been committed to creating a digital amplifier — BUT only if it could meet or exceed the performance levels of its own best analog amps, in contrast to the many manufacturers that have ‘gone digital’ with cost savings their primary goal. The M2 is the amplifier NAD has been waiting for, and working toward — a true digital paradigm breaker.

The M2 can also be said to represent a number of FIRSTS. It is the first digital amplifier to fully exploit the resolution potential of HD audio and a fully digital signal path, the first audio amplifier to use high-speed digital error correction to reduce distortion while maintaining full HD resolution, the first digital amplifier to fully implement digital closed-loop processing (a.k.a. error correction); and the first digital amplifier to implement a new technology called Direct Digital Feedback developed by U.K.-based Diodes Zetex Semiconductors Ltd. during its collaboration with NAD on the M2 project.

The M2 uses a unique, custom implementation of Diodes Zetex’s patented Direct Digital Feedback Amplifier™ (DDFA) architecture within a Xilinx field programmable gate array to provide a custom platform for blending DDFA technology with NAD’s own innovations. As a result, the M2 redefines what is possible with digital amplifier technology.

Reinventing Feedback
The M2 takes in a digital signal and outputs an analog signal to drive the loudspeaker. It avoids the limitations of conventional error correction or ‘feed back’ approaches used to achieve very low distortion by generating a feedback signal through comparison with an extremely pure reference, then converting the signal to the digital domain at an 108MHz sample rate before using it for correction. Direct Digital Feedback simply determines the pulse area error, no matter the cause, and passes the information to the digital domain for compensation.

The M2 possesses an extremely wide data path that allows compensation without truncating any information in the original signal. The result: very low noise and distortion in the audio band, combined with blinding speed and precision.

Streamlined Signal Path
Since the M2 can accept a digital PCM input directly, it completely eliminates the noise and distortion added by the cascaded analog amplifying stages typically found in traditional Class AB or even Class D amplifiers. Such streamlining of the system architecture can also reduce the residual noise and distortion of the overall system by eliminating several amplifier stages. The result is a stunning sense of musical intimacy, a feeling of being closer to every performance.

The M2 also includes a DSP is custom programmed with NAD’s high-resolution digital volume control possessing a broad attenuation range and perfect channel balance. A five-position digital impedance compensation filter allows fine-tuning the top octave to match the selected speaker impedance, resulting in a perfectly flat frequency response at 20kHz.

Unmatched Versatility
The M2 is also equipped with a fully balanced, state-of-the-art Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) to accommodate existing analog audio sources and because some owners will want to use a traditional analog preamplifier. The analog input buffer amp and the ADC are the highest quality available, and accept both a single-ended input and a balanced XLR input.

A unique Digital Processor Loop allows advanced users to insert external digital filters into the signal path. For example, the M2’s optical TosLink jack allows fuss-free connection to Macintosh and PC computers, which can access a wide library of crossover filters and room correction programs. Digital outputs in both coaxial and optical formats make it possible to use multiple M2s for the bi- or tri-amplification of advanced loudspeaker systems.

Power and Control Integrity
The M2 employs three power supplies, all highly efficient switch mode types. Each channel receives its own high current power supply in a dual mono configuration. The input stage and control sections also receive dedicated power supplies with multiple regulated secondary voltages for individual sections.  The M2’s Digital PowerDrive™ circuit further refines loudspeaker performance by maintaining optimum power delivery and the lowest possible distortion. The M2 has excellent dynamic power capabilities, unlike most digital amplifiers without power reserves. NAD’s Digital Soft Clipping™ prevents the harsh sound and potential speaker damage that can result when a severely overdriven amplifier clips the tops and bottoms of the sine wave. The M2 completely controls this behavior with digital precision.

Equally important, the M2 has been carefully engineered with multi-stage fail-safe protections to prevent amplifier or speaker damage under fault conditions. It handles short circuits, DC offsets, overheating, and over current faults instantly, while displaying an indication of the fault on the front panel. The M2’s RS-232 serial interface allows it to be controlled from a PC or through advanced control systems like those from Crestron and AMX. A 12V Trigger and IR Input permit other popular control options, and add flexibility for home and studio use.

NAD’s M2 Direct Digital Amplifier will be available this Summer from authorized NAD dealers at a suggested price of $5,999 (U.S. MSRP).

Wisdom Audio Sets Sights on Luxury Marine Pleasure Craft Cabins with New Sage Series Speaker Systems

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

CARSON CITY, Nev., May 26, 2009 Wisdom Audio (www.wisdomaudio.com), the leader in planar magnetic technologies, has now set its sights on luxury pleasure craft cabins with its new award-winning, high-end Sage Series speaker systems. Now shipping, Wisdom Audio has recently brought to market more than 20 Sage Series models, encompassing in-wall, on-wall, and freestanding versions of most configurations ranging from 20 inches to 76 inches tall.

“Whether the luxury pleasure craft is one’s primary residence, or a short- or long-term retreat, we have designed our new award-winning Sage Series for multiple configurations so they may also be utilized and enjoyed in high-end marine in-cabin applications,” explained Mark Glazier, Wisdom Audio president. “To most, larger yachts, cabin cruisers, and the like are a home away from home. Their owners want to include as many comparable luxury entertainment conveniences as possible in their pleasure crafts as they do in their houses.”

But, according to Glazier, many such high-end home entertainment audio/video systems are ill-suited for marine in-cabin enjoyment because most high-quality speakers tend to be too cumbersome and not designed for the environmental rigors of marine applications.

“Wisdom has designed the Sage Series with this in mind,” Glazier continued. “The Sage Series, because of its proprietary technologies and numerous form factors in both casing and number of speaker configurations (anywhere from 2.1 to 7.3 systems), can be utilized as standalone, on-wall, or- in-wall, so they are adaptable to both smaller and larger marine cabins. Also, in order to insure the highest degree of reliability when exposed to the most extreme marine environmental conditions, Wisdom Audio has submitted all key components to severe environmental testing.

During successful testing, Wisdom Audio’s Sage Series components were exposed to 85 degrees Celsius at 85 percent relative humidity for a period of ten days, temperature cycling from minus 40 degrees Celsius to plus 105 degrees Celsius with a two hour dwell time at each extreme for a period of five days, and salt fog exposure at 95 degrees Fahrenheit with a five percent mist of salt solution for 48 hours.

Besides the number of speaker choices, multiple center channels, an in-wall subwoofer, integrated Audyssey Laboratories™ room correction software, and dedicated electronics round out the new product offerings. Sage Series speakers incorporate new generation proprietary thin film planar magnetic drivers which allow for its narrow and shallow physical characteristics, thus permitting the unprecedented possibility of the same driver complement and back box to be used for such varied applications, ranging from in-wall to on-wall to freestanding use.

Wisdom is offering the pleasure craft owner a unique addition to the state-of-the-art through the incorporation of new, proprietary Wisdom Audio designed transducer technology, an innovative in-wall mounting system yielding improved sonic and structural characteristics, bi-amplified systems employing dedicated amplifiers, and an electronic crossover/equalizer that utilizes Audyssey™ room correction software. The inclusion of all of these elements in each of the Sage Series systems and the resulting performance achieved differentiates Wisdom’s offerings from all other known architectural and in-room solutions. And the freestanding product allows Wisdom to deliver a high performance planar magnetic/hybrid series of products, designed in a narrow and shallow cabinet, which has a small physical and visual footprint.

“We knew we had a winner with the Sage Series during development because there is no other high-end loudspeaker system like it anywhere, and multiple awards as well as exceptional customer and additional editorial feedback confirm our belief,” concluded Glazier. “The new Sage Series has it all…from design to aesthetic appeal to, most importantly, industry category-leading performance. The discerning consumer who wants to bring high-end audio to their pleasure craft will be sure to want to consider the new Sage Series.”

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

– Network-Enabled A/V Servers with iPod Command and Control Add Rhapsody and Napster Connectivity, Faster Networking, IP Control and More –

Mahwah, NJ, May 11, 2009 - Denon Electronics, one of the world’s premier manufacturers of high-quality home entertainment components, introduced two new Network-Enabled iPod Docks, models ASD-51W and ASD-51N, both with Apple® iPod command and control, as well as a host of new capabilities and features. Both the ASD-51W (SRP: $299.99) and ASD-51N (SRP: $249.99) are scheduled for August 2009 availability.

Connectivity to Rhapsody and Napster Music Services

Building on the capabilities and benefits of Denon’s predecessor ASD-3N/W models, the ASD-51N and ASD-51W add exciting new features that give users an even greater level of network connectivity to many A/V components, including A/V receivers, video display products and single speaker solutions, allowing them to stream audio files, pictures, Internet radio stations and more through the connected devices.  Notably, both new devices let users stream music from Internet Radio sources, as well as provide connection to RhapsodyTM and Napster music services (subscription required) and other network attached storage devices.  As with the ASD-3N/W, the devices recharge the iPod while in dock.

New Features Geared Toward Custom Integrators

Both new Denon Network-Enabled iPod Docks were engineered with a variety of features and capabilities designed to help professional custom integrators better serve their clients. For example, they offer IP Control (AMX/Crestron), Web Remote Control, and iPod audio streaming to new Denon networked products. In addition, a new Multi-Zone Management feature allows custom installers to quickly and easily perform a status check of all networked Denon products.  Both models also feature a special “Party Mode” multi-zone network streaming management system for use with new Denon A/V receivers that allows users to enjoy music throughout the home played simultaneously in up to five Denon devices on the network.

New Denon receivers include the following, with expected availability dates in parenthesis: AVR-4310CI (SRP: $1,999, May ‘09), AVR-3310CI (SRP: $1,499, June ‘09), AVR-2310CI (SRP: $849, June ‘09), AVR-1910 (SRP: $549, May ‘09) and AVR-1610 (SRP: $379, May ‘09), as well as four new receivers in Denon’s Retail Home Theater Series line, the AVR-990 (SRP: $1,499, July ‘09), AVR-890 (SRP: $799, June ‘09), AVR-790 (SRP: $499, June ‘09) and AVR-590 (SRP: $349, June ‘09). The initials “CI” (for Custom Integration) in the three models noted above emphasize the inclusion of special features and capabilities geared specifically toward professional custom integrators.

Noted Joe Stinziano, Sr. Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Denon Electronics: “Today’s home entertainment universe offers people more exciting choices than ever before, from ultra-sophisticated whole-home networked systems to basic living-room home theater and everything in between.  In whatever choice a consumer makes, the audio/video receiver is an indispensable system component.  After carefully considering the demands of all our customers, including both custom integrators and consumers, Denon has engineered a line of new receivers that provides users with simple solutions for all their needs, including quick and easy setup to ensure maximum performance from all source components, as well as a host of ‘common sense’ lifestyle features that add to a user’s overall entertainment experience.”

Ideal Choices for Every Home Entertainment Need and Budget

With its new receiver line, Denon provides consumers with the broadest possible range of choices in advanced, easy-to-use home entertainment solutions for every need and budget. Notably, the line features the introduction of several industry-leading performance features, including the world’s first Audyssey DSX with front height or expanded width channels in the receiver category (AVR-4310CI) and Dolby Pro Logic IIz decoding in all models. By incorporating these technologies, the listener’s surround experience is dramatically improved, adding a vertical component to the horizontal soundfield of both 5.1- or 7.1-channel systems. The enhanced spatial audio effect provides a new dimension of presence and depth while maintaining the integrity of the source mix and ensuring audio is always appropriate to the source material. Other advanced features now included in all Denon receivers are HDMI 1.3a Repeater Inputs with Deep Color, xv-Color and CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), analog-to-HDMI conversion and HD Audio decoding from Dolby and dts.

The new receivers are also engineered throughout to provide consumers with all the features and capabilities they need to enjoy maximum compatibility with today’s home entertainment source components. For example, iPod connectivity is featured in models throughout the line, including direct digital audio connection via USB port in the AVR-4310CI.

Total User Convenience, From Setup to Everyday Enjoyment!

From the first day out of the box through everyday use as the “nerve center” of a total home entertainment system, Denon’s new receivers are designed for total user convenience and enjoyment.  All models feature a newly designed and refreshingly easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI). They also all feature simple one-cable HDMI connections and come with new easy-to-understand “Getting Started” guides that outline the steps of system setup, including networking setup where applicable. Notably, the new models all feature on-screen display (OSD) or GUI overlay via the HDMI connection – eliminating the frustrating necessity of additional cable switching or programming interruptions when making adjustments, such as volume, while watching HD content. Further enhancing ease-of-use, all models feature Source/Quick Select Power On and Quick Select options on the remote control.

Leading-edge lifestyle features throughout the line that further enhance user convenience and enjoyment include: Audyssey Dynamic Volume, a volume leveling technology that frees listeners from the disruptive changes in volume; Audyssey Dynamic EQ, a loudness correction technology; and Audyssey MultEQ, the in-room acoustic measurement and correction system.

Advanced Networking and Connectivity Options

Denon receivers continue to set the pace for today’s revolution in home entertainment networking, with a host of exciting networking and Web access capabilities. For instance, the AVR-4310CI, AVR-3310CI and AVR-990 allow users to stream audio and photos directly from their PCs, choose from over 7,500 Internet radio stations, and connect to Rhapsody and Napster music services (subscription required). Recognizing the demand for receivers capable of delivering audio and video to multiple zones within the home, Denon’s new AVR-4310CI and AVR-3310CI offer three-zone, three-source capability and all other new models feature dual-zone, dual-source capability.

As always, connectivity convenience and efficiency are a top priority in Denon’s receivers, bringing consumers and professional custom integrators ideal “common sense” solutions for creating state-of-the-art multi-zone systems.   Among the custom-integration features included in all Denon “CI” models are a RS-232 for 3rd Party control and assignable high current DC trigger outputs.  Denon is an industry integration partner with Crestron, AMX, Universal Remote Control and RTI, underscoring its dedication to the custom integrator (CI) market and helping ensure that its products can be easily integrated into any type of CI-designed system.

AVR-4310CI: Leading-Edge Features and Capabilities

Leading off Denon’s new receiver line is the 7.1-channel AVR-4310CI, engineered with a full complement of leading-edge features and capabilities. It features six HDMI inputs and two parallel HDMI outputs, including a single front-panel HDMI input for added convenience. The highest resolution audio decoders are provided, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for the ultimate in audio fidelity. Analog and digital video sources are upconverted via Anchor Bay Technologies VRS processing to HD quality (up to 1080p/24/60). In addition to XM and Sirius satellite radio options, the AVR-4310CI and AVR-3310CI both feature built-in HD Radio for dramatically improved fidelity. The AVR-4310CI also incorporates the advanced DENON Link 4th, featuring HDMI Clock Control – when using the HDMI interface for A/V output for Blu-ray playback in combination with Denon Link, HDMI Clock Control gives the Master Clock and Jitter reduction to be handled by the connected Denon A/V Receiver/Processor.  DENON Link 4th retains all the features from the 3rd edition, including a fully balanced digital connection to handle the transmission and reduction of Jitter of SACD, DVD-Audio, and PCM signals as will as Dolby Digital and dts surround tracks.  Beginning in June, owners of Denon’s flagship AVR-5308CI receiver and AVP-A1HDCI Ultra-Reference 12-Channel A/V Home Theater/MultiMedia Preamplifier will be able to receive a free firmware upgrade to add DENON Link 4th.

New Retail Home Theater Series Models: High-Value, High-Performance

With their elegantly styled cosmetic design and sophisticated features, the four new 7.1-channel receivers in Denon’s Retail Home Theater Series line (AVR-990, AVR-890, AVR-790 and AVR-590) offer many of the same high-quality features and capabilities that distinguish Denon receivers in the marketplace, including many of those found in the company’s CI models. All models, for instance, feature simple one-cable HDMI connections, compatibility with HDMI 1.3a Repeating and Dolby Pro Logic IIz decoding providing for front height channels. The AVR-890 and AVR-990 both feature Denon’s newly designed GUI with overlay via the HDMI connection, and the AVR-590 and AVR-790 both feature Denon’s new enhanced icon-based OSD.  Models AVR-990, AVR-890 and AVR-790 are Sirius Satellite Radio Ready (via Mini-DIN Connector), and the advanced networking Model AVR-990 adds built-in HD Radio as well as an RJ-45 Ethernet Port for third-party controllers, Mac/PC audio streaming, a Web browser function and more. All models feature 10-bit video processing, analog-to-HDMI video conversion, 24-bit/192-kHz Analog Devices DACs, and all include Audyssey Dynamic Volume, Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Audyssey MultEQ.

Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding in the new Retail Home Theater Series models allow for stunning delivery of today’s most advanced high-definition audio programming. Model AVR-990 features Anchor Bay Technologies ABT-2010 advanced video deinterlacing and upscaling, converting SD sources to HD.  And thanks to the dedicated Denon iPod dock accessory control port on all models, users may connect and control their iPod/iPod Touch or iPhone using one of Denon’s available iPod/iPhone docks, which provides on-screen artist, album and song information.

Denon has increased the number of HDMI inputs in its Retail Home Theater Series receivers (3 in the AVR-590, 4 in the AVR-790, and 5 in the AVR-890 and AVR-990), and now includes dual source and zone capabilities on all models with the exception of the AVR-590.
