Onkyo Introduces the World’s 1st AV Receiver with Dolby ProLogic IIz

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Onkyo targets value-conscious consumers with a Spring 2009 AV Receiver line-up offering new technologies, features, and performance not previously available at these prices. UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (3/12/09) – As the first installment of its 2009 product line-up, Onkyo has introduced three new home theater receivers, including the world’s first to offer Dolby’s new ProLogic IIz processing, which can produce sound effects above the listener’s head. Theses models, which range in price from $299 to $599, also include an array of advanced HD audio and video technologies from Onkyo, Dolby, DTS, Audyssey, Faroudja, and others that were previously only available at higher price points.

The TX-SR607 features six HDMI inputs, and is the first AV receiver with a front-panel HDMI input. With the debut of the new TX-SR607 receiver, Onkyo has the distinction of becoming the world’s first manufacturer to launch a 7.2-channel home cinema receiver featuring the all-new Dolby Pro-Logic IIz mode. Designed to take home cinema sound to new heights (literally!) DPL IIz introduces a vertical aspect to the sound field through the addition of left and right-channel front height speakers mounted above the main speakers. Based on the initial positive reactions to demonstrations of this technology to dealers, Onkyo anticipates good demand for expanded height channel capabilities in future models. “We are very excited to be the first audio manufacturer to utilize this exciting new surround format from Dolby,” comments Onkyo USA marketing manager Paul Wasek. “It adds a new realm of audience involvement in three dimensions, with surprise aircraft flyovers triggering the ‘duck’ reflex. Onkyo has launched this technology on our most popular AV receiver, rather than our most expensive, in order to reach out to a much larger customer base. The company’s premium receiver lineup, which will roll out over the Summer, will include expanded height-channel capabilities, internet radio and network audio technologies at lower price points.” These new models are well equipped for Blu-ray and other HD audio and video source components, with HDMI repeaters plus Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio processing in the TX-SR607 and TX-SR507.

The entry-level TX-SR307 has HDMI pass-through switching on three inputs, while all three models support 1080p, Deep Color, and x.v.Color. All of these receivers use Audyssey 2EQ, an automatic calibration system which corrects each channel’s output in both frequency and time domains based on measurements at three unique listening positions, Audyssey Dynamic Volume technology, which optimizes the dynamic range of listening material at any listening level, and Audyssey Dynamic EQ, which corrects problems associated with reduced sound quality at low listening levels. Onkyo has also developed four new exclusive gaming modes designed to enhance the listener’s experience when using video game systems. Players can select from Rock, Sports, Action, or Role Playing game modes to match the gaming content. These new modes will immerse all the players in the action like never before. The Onkyo TX-SR607 and TX-SR507 are the first to use the company’s new proprietary rear-panel universal port, which simplifies the connection for Onkyo’s forthcoming HD Radio Tuner and iPod Dock that will be available in late spring. The 5.1-channel TX-SR307 and TX-SR507 have 65- and 80-watts per channel amplifiers respectively, while the 7.2-channel TX-SR607 is rated at 90 watts per channel, has dual subwoofer line-outputs, upconverts all analog sources to HDMI via Faroujda DCDi technology, and is Sirius Satellite Radio ready.

The Onkyo TX-SR307 and TX-SR507 will be available in March, and the TX-SR607 in April with suggested retail prices of $299, $399, and $599 respectively. Onkyo, which takes its name from the Japanese “On” meaning ‘sound’ and “Kyo” meaning ‘harmony,’ has been producing precision audio components for over a half-century. The company’s philosophy is to deliver products that are superbly designed and built to a consistently outstanding standard of excellence. Today, Onkyo is at the forefront of the home theater and digital revolutions. For more information about this and other fine Onkyo products, visit www.onkyousa.com or call 800-229-1687.

SUPERPOWERED ANTHEM STATEMENT D2v NOW SHIPPING

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

More connections, better A/V processing and support for the latest audio formats make version two of the acclaimed preamplifier/processor an A/V-phile’s dream.

Toronto, Ontario – March 10, 2009 – Anthem, a leading manufacturer of high-end electronics for music, home theater and distributed audio systems, announces the availability of version two of its award-winning Statement D2 audio/video processor. The next-generation model enhances the unparalleled performance features found in its first iteration with significant upgrades.

As a pioneer in the troubleshooting and integration of HDMI™, Anthem knows better than most how to utilize these connections to their fullest. The Statement D2v is equipped with four additional HDMI 1.3c inputs (for a total of eight) and one additional HDMI 1.3c output (for a total of two), delivering unprecedented connection capabilities for a preamplifier/processor. All inputs and outputs offer Deep-Color support (36-bit).

More connections are useful, of course, but performance is king. The Anthem Statement D2v delivers outstanding video enhancement courtesy of its updated VXP digital image processor. This “latest-generation” processor offers professional-grade, fully-adaptive deinterlacing. Also included are adaptive 3D noise reduction, mosquito noise reduction, block artifact reduction, adaptive detail enhancement featuring sharpness and texture enhancement with overshoot control, and adaptive contrast enhancement. The D2v’s powerful, multi-layered graphics engine allows for sophisticated on-screen display generation that is ideal for setup menus.

Audio performance on the Statement D2v has been ramped up to meet the demands of emerging HD audio standards. Two dual-core digital signal processor (DSP) engines offer 800 MIPS (million instructions per second) of processing power to allow 7.1-channel decoding of Dolby® Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD™ High-Resolution Audio and DTS-HD™ Master Audio. The Anthem Statement D2v also supports 24/192 PCM audio input, up to 7.1 channels.

Anthem’s Room Correction System (ARC) is a standard feature on all Statement D2v preamplifier/processors. While equalizing frequency response in a room to achieve some generic (i.e., “flat”) response is a common approach, it sounds unnatural because it assumes the listening room is anechoic and does not account for how a speaker sounds in a room. Anthem’s true audiophile approach with ARC instead uses proprietary processing to compute each speaker’s in-room frequency response and then computes a target frequency response for each to yield the optimal sound.

Estimated FMV for the Anthem Statement D2v is $7,499. For more information, please visit www.anthemav.com.

*Key features of VXP technology include: • Superior image quality using per-pixel processing. • Very robust film mode detection. • TruMotionHD™ Adaptive De-Interlacing to ensure optimal image sharpness and picture resolution when converting 480i, 576i and 1080i inputs to progressive scan. • FineEdge™ Dynamic Directional Interpolation to eliminate jaggy artifacts (i.e. temporal distortion) found in traditional de-interlacing algorithms. • FidelityEngine™ Image Enhancements to remove unwanted noise and improve detail. • RealityExpansion™ True 12-Bit Image Processing for eye-catching natural imagery.

Oppo BDP-83

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Like most readers at Secrets we too have been more than anxious to get our hands on Oppo’s much anticipated new Blu-ray player and to our extreme delight, it’s here. Secrets is fortunate enough to have a couple to audition so do expect information over the next few days on this blog as we prepare a full-out benchmark of the BDP-83.

Superfluous to say, most know of Oppo’s stellar reputation for developing affordable ultra-high performance DVD players.

The unit is much taller than typical Oppo players but similarly adorned on the front with minimal controls. Interesting enough though on the extreme right is a USB port.

Anyone who’s ordered an Oppo DVD player will know how it arrives packed – the unit is wrapped in a canvas bag, comes complete with an HDMI and typical RCA cables, instruction manual and nicely designed remote.

The rear sports audio analog 7.1/5.1 for those who want the Oppo to process the HD audio codecs for older AV receivers that cannot process lossless signals, as well as stereo outputs. Additionally are digital coaxial and optical outputs. Composite and component video outputs compliment the HDMI output. Also you notice an Ethernet port, a USB 2.0 port and finally IR IN and Out ports.

The remote control is extremely functional and logically arranged. Touching any button will automatically make it glow amber. The larger stop/play/pause buttons are easily found in the dark and the 4 colored buttons functions vary by content. All in all it feels good in your hand and working with the new GUI (more on that later), makes navigating the menus quite easy.

A lot of us have wanted to see an all-in-one solution Blu-ray player that not only delivers Blu-ray movies in stunning picture and sound but also provides extra features like Internet download capability and proper standard DVD deinterlacing, and perhaps some versatile audio options as well. Looks like the BD-83 is gearing up to be just that kind of a player with features like BD-Live, bitstream and internal decoding of next gen audio formats, USB Stick support (for audio, picture, and video) SACD playback in bitstream format, and standard DVD deinterlacing capabilities. As we are just getting this player on the bench, it looks like Oppo has been wanting to maintain their reputation for excellent deinterlacing and the player is soaring through many of our benchmark tests.

Added March 15

Two features that the BD-83 supports are BD-Live capability and USB ports, which are used for enjoying picture, audio, and video media. Both the front and rear USB ports on this player are designed to be used with flash drives as they only can supply 5v, 500mA of power but external hard drives can be used as well if they have their own power supply. Navigation occurs through an easy to use on-screen menu. There’s not a comprehensive list of all the file formats that the player supports available at this time, but you can bet that there is support for all the major ones like .jpg, mp3, and DivX. We are glad to see the BD-83 support USB devices as it makes the player more of a one stop location for all your media playback.

BD-Live is just now making more of an appearance on Blu-ray releases and a lot of studios are even converting HD-DVD interactive features released on previous titles into a BD-Live format. There’s a lot of development in the works for BD-Live to get it to a point where the interaction is more worthwhile and fun but the capability is definitely a welcome addition on the BD-83. BD-Live is made possible on this player via an Ethernet port on the back of the unit and a useful feature that the BD-83 supports is the ability to filter or turn off BD-Live activity entirely. It’s especially nice for those concerned about network activity that is initiated without consent such as BD-Live titles that begin downloading material as soon as the disc loads. The Ethernet port on this unit also enables firmware updates via download, and grants the possibility of additional network based features released in the future. Big kudos to Oppo on that.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sandy Gross Retires From Definitive Technology

Co-founder and industry icon executes final step in his long-planned exit strategy

Baltimore. MD—March 10, 2009—Today Definitive Technology co-founder and President Sandy Gross announced his retirement from Definitive effective March 31, 2009. Sandy’s retirement has been long-contemplated but kept confidential while he positioned the company and key executives for a smooth transition after his exit.

“Since we sold Definitive to Directed Electronics in 2004 I’ve been contemplating the next phase of my life. For decades I’ve worked 24/7 running my businesses and I saw the time approaching when I would want to slow down, take a break and contemplate my future plans. But I didn’t want to leave before there was a management structure in place that could continue Definitive’s legacy of quality and success” said Mr. Gross.

In 2007 Sandy promoted long-time Definitive executive Dave Peet to Executive Vice President. The same year Sandy tapped Polk Audio veteran Paul DiComo to join Definitive as Vice President of Marketing. Since then Peet and DiComo have been running Definitive’s day to day business while Gross slowly transitioned out of daily management. Upon Gross’s departure DiComo and Peet will assume all of Gross’s remaining responsibilities.
Gross continued, “I have supreme confidence in Dave and Paul’s abilities to take Definitive to new heights. I’ve known and worked closely with both of them for many years and I know they have all the tools necessary to succeed. They share my passion for high quality audio, music and responsible business management.”

Dave Peet has extensive experience in CE retailing with both small and large retailers including 14 years with Illinois specialty A/V retailer United Audio as store manager and Buyer/Merchandiser. While he was buyer United became one of Definitive’s best dealers due to his innovative merchandising and passion for the brand. Peet joined Definitive as VP International Sales in 2001 and rose through the ranks to VP of Sales where he reorganized and expanded Definitive’s sales force for improved customer service and sales. As Executive VP, Peet is responsible for worldwide sales and administration.

Paul DiComo also came up through the specialty A/V retail ranks within Boston area retailers before transitioning to manufacturing with NAD. Paul joined Polk Audio as National Sales Manager in the early ‘80s. In 1995 DiComo moved from sales to Marketing where he improved the quantity and quality of Polk’s PR exposure and helped design several iterations of the company’s websites. Since joining Definitive DiComo has modernized and upgraded Definitive’s graphic assets, marketing materials and built an entirely new and dramatically improved Definitive Technology website.

DEI Holdings CEO Jim Minarik said, “We’re grateful to Sandy for all of his contributions to the company and for doing an excellent job of preparing for the future by assembling such a strong team to lead the company. In Dave and Paul we have among the most capable and experienced management teams in the loudspeaker industry.”

“Sandy brought me into Polk and later into Definitive and I count him as the single biggest influence on my professional development. We’re sad to see him go but at the same time we are thrilled for him” said DiComo. Dave Peet said of Gross “When the history of the audio business is written Sandy’s career will deserve several chapters. Sandy is universally loved and respected by all he came in contact with. He has been an inspiration to many in the industry including Paul and me. We’re determined to carry on Sandy’s vision for Definitive and to make him proud that he chose us as his successors.”

About Sandy Gross

Sandy Gross has the distinction, shared only by industry legend Henry Kloss, of having founded and brought to prominence two leading loudspeaker brands, Polk Audio and Definitive Technology. Along with partners Matthew Polk, George Klopfer and Craig Georgi, Sandy founded Polk Audio in 1972. Sandy’s product development collaboration with Matthew Polk produced a string of iconic loudspeakers including the Polk 10 and the SDA Series of stereo-enhancing loudspeakers. Sandy’s similarly iconic ad campaigns of that era are still fondly remembered by industry veterans. One, featuring a lab coat-clad Matthew Polk, helped launch Polk Audio from a small start-up to an industry leader. Soon after leaving Polk Audio in 1988, Sandy joined with two Canadian partners Don Givogue and Ed Blais to form Definitive Technology in 1990. Sandy’s product and marketing skills built Definitive from a home-based business with one speaker model to arguably the best selling line of high-end home loudspeakers. Sandy’s Definitive accomplishments include the Mythos series the first thin wall mount “designed for plasma” speakers, the development and popularization of “powered tower” loudspeakers with built-in powered subwoofers and advertising campaigns that drove consumers into retailers like none before.

About Definitive Technology

Definitive Technology has been committed to building superior sounding home audio and home theater loudspeakers since 1990, when the company was founded by Sandy Gross, Ed Givogue and Ed Blais, three lifelong audiophiles and experts in speaker design, acoustics and marketing. Definitive Technology loudspeakers are the most positively reviewed and honored high performance loudspeakers on the market. Based in Baltimore, Maryland, Definitive Technology is part of the DEI Holdings family of consumer electronics brands. Audio/video specialty retailers throughout the US and over 30 countries around the world proudly sell Definitive Technology loudspeakers.
