JBL Northridge E Series Speakers

March 25, 2004

WOODBURY, NY – JBL, a leading manufacturer of professional and consumer loudspeakers, has improved and restyled its acclaimed Northridge Series loudspeaker line with the Northridge E Series, offering greater sonic accuracy and more attractive styling in an expanded range of models. Northridge E Series loudspeakers utilize designs and technologies employed in JBL’s professional recording studio monitors to deliver legendary JBL sound quality and set new standards in their respective categories.

The JBL Northridge E Series includes 12 models: a uniquely styled wall-mount/bookshelf design (E10); three compact bookshelf loudspeakers (E20, E30, and the horizontal/vertical, mirror-image E50), four floorstanding tower speakers (E60, E80, E90 and E100); two dedicated center-channel loudspeakers  (EC25 and EC35); and two powered subwoofers (E150P and E250P). Prices for JBL Northridge E Series loudspeakers range from $198.00 a pair to $998.00 a pair suggested retail in the U.S.; Northridge E Series models are also available internationally.

Paul Bente, president of JBL Consumer Products, pointed out: “Our Northridge Series loudspeakers have become extremely popular among consumers for their outstanding performance and value, and the upgraded Northridge E Series takes all the sonic strengths of the previous models to even higher levels. In addition, we’ve added new models to the lineup in response to dealer requests and customer needs, to accommodate a wider range of home entertainment systems and installation requirements.”

Northridge E Series: Enhanced Sonic Performance and Design Elegance

To achieve their improved sonic performance, Northridge E Series loudspeakers feature improved titanium-laminate dome tweeters, and PolyPlas™ woofers and midrange drivers, precision-manufactured to tighter specifications for more consistent and refined sound quality. In addition, the enclosures have been redesigned to minimize internal resonances and cabinet colorations, enabling maximum air movement and energy to be generated by the drivers for improved clarity and resolution.

All Northridge E Series tweeters are made from 75 percent titanium deposited on a lightweight substrate, for high strength and rigidity, along with excellent transient response, clarity, resolution and power-handling capability. The tweeters operate in conjunction with JBL’s Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal™ (EOS™) waveguide, which delivers the same response off-axis as it does on-axis and directs sound toward the listening area and away from the side walls, for a wider sound field with improved imaging.

Northridge E Series woofers and midrange drivers feature cones made from JBL’s proprietary PolyPlas™ polymer-coated-cellulose-fiber cone material, which combines the sonic neutrality of paper with the added rigidity and damping of the PolyPlas treatment, to dampen internal resonances, provide a smooth frequency response with faster transients and enable higher playback levels without distortion. Complementing this innovative cone technology, the woofers and midrange drivers feature JBL’s HeatScape™ motor structure, which provides efficient heat dissipation for accurate driver performance even during high-volume playback.

The Northridge E Series IsoPower™ baffle design rigidly affixes all drivers to an extremely dense, nonresonant baffle, allowing maximum air movement and energy to be generated by the drivers, while minimizing energy loss. Northridge E Series models feature high-strength, high-density wood enclosures, braced and damped for minimal internal vibration and unwanted cabinet colorations.

All Northridge E Series models, including the subwoofers, incorporate JBL’s FreeFlow™ port technology, utilizing a specially shaped bass port that is tuned to the woofer and cabinet for extended low-frequency response and improved efficiency. To ensure maximum clarity and resolution, Northridge E Series loudspeakers utilize JBL’s Straight-line Signal Path™ (SSP™) crossover network, which employs a minimum of premium-quality parts to preserve the integrity of the musical signal. All models except the subwoofers are video-shielded, allowing placement close to a TV set, and feature gold-plated, five-way binding posts to facilitate use with heavy-duty, audiophile-quality speaker cables. Models EC335, E30, E50, E60, E80, E90 and E100 also feature dual sets of terminals for bi-wiring or bi-amping to isolate the high and low frequency signals for superior accuracy.

Along with improved sonic performance, Northridge E Series models are more elegant in appearance, with restyled contours, grille cloths and trim. They are available in a variety of configurations to accommodate every home entertainment installation requirement, from the E10, featuring a compact, slim-profile angular design that facilitates wall- or bookshelf-mounting, to bookshelf models and large floorstanding tower loudspeakers. All Northridge E Series models are available in a choice of black ash, beech or cherry finishes accented by charcoal grilles.

All JBL Northridge E Series loudspeakers carry a five-year warranty and are currently available.

Following is an overview of selected models in the Northridge E Series lineup.

JBL’s E100: Flagship of the Northridge E Series

JBL’s E100 is the top of the line in the Northridge E Series, a full-range three-way loudspeaker designed for extraordinary performance in the most ambitious home entertainment systems. Capable of reproducing movie soundtracks and music at “real life” volume levels with remarkable authority and presence, the E100 is a substantial, yet refined tower design measuring 42" wide by 12-1/4" wide by 14-1/2" deep. Its
standard-setting sonic performance is made possible by its dual 10-inch, high-power PolyPlas woofers, four-inch PolyPlas midrange driver and 3/4-inch titanium-laminate tweeter operating in conjunction with an EOS waveguide.

Sonically, the E100 is a superlative all-around performer that conveys the emotion and impact of movies and music with exceptional realism. Its wideband frequency response is smooth and uncolored, with taut, extended bass, a rich, musically inviting, midrange, and open, detailed high frequencies. The E100 is powerful and dynamic, yet also resolves subtle musical details with accuracy and finesse, and its EOS waveguide provides pinpoint imaging and an expansive soundstage over a wide listening area. Despite its power, its slim profile blends in with room décor (SRP: $499 each).

JBL’s E10: Outstanding Sound Quality and Installation Versatility

The Northridge E Series E10 is a compact two-way loudspeaker featuring a unique design with angled corners that give it a slimmer profile, enabling it to be inconspicuously mounted on a wall or shelf to complement any home entertainment installation. Although it measures just 10" high by 10-1/8" wide by just 5-1/4" deep, the E10 delivers dynamic, musically involving sound quality, thanks to its 3/4-inch titanium-composite tweeter and EOS waveguide, long-throw, high-excursion, 4-inch PolyPlas woofer and FreeFlow port precisely tuned to the drivers and cabinet for maximum bass response and efficiency. The E10 is ideal

for use in a variety of applications such as the left and right front, and rear surround channels in a multichannel home theater system, or as stereo loudspeakers in a high-quality music system. For maximum mounting flexibility, the E10 is equipped with keyhole-type wall-mount brackets (SRP: $198 per pair).

The EC25 is a center channel home theater loudspeaker designed to reproduce dialogue with outstanding clarity, dynamic realism and accurate localization. The two-way EC25 features a 3/4-inch titanium-laminate tweeter with EOS waveguide and dual 5-inch PolyPlas woofers, a configuration that provides an ideal dispersion pattern over a wider listening area and precisely locates dialogue to correspond with the on-screen action. Measuring 6-7/8" high by 18" wide by 10" deep, the EC25 is voice-matched to blend sonically with every Northridge E Series model, to create a seamless, three-dimensional soundstage in multichannel home entertainment systems (SRP: $249 each).

JBL’s E250P Subwoofer: Authoritative Low-Frequency Response

JBL’s E250P is a high-performance subwoofer designed to deliver extraordinary low-frequency impact and sonic realism in home theater and music systems. The E250P incorporates a high-excursion, front-firing 12-inch PolyPlas woofer operating in a bass-reflex enclosure, and a built-in 250-watt amplifier to deliver clean, articulate, musically accurate bass response. The E250P’s efficient Class D digital amplifier is also capable of achieving a Peak Dynamic Power of 550 Watts. JBL uses the most rigorous scientific techniques to measure peak dynamic power by recording the highest center-to-peak voltage measured across the output of a resistive load equal to the minimum impedance of the transducer, using a 50Hz sine wave burst, three cycles on, 17 cycles off. The E250P provides a full complement of audio connections and adjustment controls including line-level (switchable to LFE) and speaker-level inputs, variable crossover-frequency and volume controls, and a phase switch, to achieve optimum sonic performance with any loudspeaker complement, system, and room (SRP: $499 each).
