CompUSA Opens Digital Entertainment Products Department

December 9, 2003

CompUSA, best known as a national retailer of computer products, software and accessories, is expanding to include home electronics products in 181 of its 227 stores in November. The new department will focus on digital entertainment products, and reflects the convergence of technology and entertainment.

When asked why CompUSA wanted to enter the already busy home electronics retail space, Henry Chiarelli, Divisional Merchandise Manager for Consumer Electronics commented, "CompUSA is already a proven expert in the digital data category, so it's a natural step for us to expand into digital entertainment given the direction that industry has taken. We call it the merger of the data dots and entertainment dots. There are many (competitors) with knowledge of the digital entertainment products, but none have the understanding on the technology side like CompUSA.

"Bottomline, home entertainment is quickly moving toward the data technology side of the business where we succeed now. We're just folding this new product line into our many technology solutions."

In today's living space, more and more families are combining the family room and its entertainment focus with computers. Home offices have more entertainment components and family rooms have more office qualities. CompUSA's staff have been extensively trained to offer a complete lifestyle solution that takes today's large screen televisions into the home as the conduit for streaming video, radio, Internet, and of course, cable, satellite and movie entertainment.

Add this knowledge with an unmatched commitment to explain these products to the consumer in-store or in-home, teach them, as well as install them in the consumer's house, and you can understand the advantage that can only be found at CompUSA. "Unmatched," refers to a new service CompUSA recently introduced offering free training and installation with any digital purchase. It's a novel approach that means customers will no longer have to struggle to decipher their new technology. CompUSA comes to the home -- at no charge -- to help them set-up their equipment and give them one-on-one training on how to work the technology.

"We are the only company in the industry that has the capability or the resources to come to the house to install the products and make sure the customer understands the features and benefits of the new system," explains Chiarelli. "This capability is unique and 'unmatched' in our industry."

In rolling out the new home electronics departments, CompUSA added consumer electronic experts in each of its stores and trained additional sales staff dedicated to the home electronics department. Each team member is versed in the five primary categories being introduced in the stores -- plasma, LCD, portable DVD, DVD recorders, and PVR. Some of the brand names you can expect to find are Hitachi, Panasonic, TiVo, Pioneer, Yamaha, and Onkyo.

CompUSA has partnered with Installs, Inc. as their third-party vendor for major home electronics installations. Installs, Inc. is the largest installer in the U.S. Their expertise will bring more to the install process than just hiding wires. Install has the design, craftsmanship, and experience necessary to create a seamless entertainment environment.
