Commentary

Cronenberg has been delivering some solid films these last few years and this is no exception. Probably one of the best I've seen this year in fact. Promises delivers a solid storyline that is both gripping and fierce. The acting is first rate and the pacing is perfect. Highly recommended.

Technical

A solid video presentation from Universal on this day-and-date release. Contrast and dimension are exceptional, resulting in an image that is quite impressive and full of depth. Fine object detail is excellent, and even medium to long shots are clearly resolved. Colors are a tad on the stylistic side, but saturation is natural and lends to the bleak image style. Compression is never an issue, and I didn't see any digital artifacts. The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack is also quite good and very dynamic. This isn't an action film but it delivers in atmosphere when needed. Surrounds are used nicely and give the soundtrack a very spatial quality, with some nice discrete sound effects and ambience. Dialogue is balanced nicely with the main track, and imaging overall is dead on.

Extras

Extras include some HD production features including a look at the tattoo's of the film and their roots and established place in Russian crime. This disc is also web-enabled and offers end users a chance to download trailers and scenes from other Universal films.
