Sennheiser HD 238 Precision High Resolution Stereo Headphones

If you are like I was, and only use ear-bud headphones for times when you need portable audio, and you have not invested in a pair of fine on- or over-the-ear headphones, you should seriously consider the HD 238s. I was overall blown away with their performance. I thought the carrying pouch was a little cheap, and I really would have liked to see a ⅛” to ¼” headphones jack adapter included. These headphones are so good, that you’re going to want to listen to them from your main audio system, not just your MP3 player, so be prepared to go buy an adapter if you don’t already have one. But at less than $140, these headphones represent a great value. They are a fantastic compromise between the performance of large, over-the-ear audiophile headphones (which are generally not very portable and can be quite cumbersome) and the convenience of tiny in-ear “buds” that come with most portable audio players. With the HD 238s, you will have a very fine pair of headphones that are very comfortable, and which you can take with you on the subway, or airplane, but that also make a fantastic upgrade for critical listening at home. Indeed, I fear that 2 months with the HD 238s has put me well on my way to tweaker-audiophile status. Now, where can I find some green paint?

It's hard to take this review at face value as it appears you do not have much experience with headphones. You would be hard pressed to find a pair of moderately expensive headphones that do not beat out stock earbuds and what I assume are relatively inexpensive Sony's. I am not criticizing, well, ok I am a little, but moreover to my point: how do these compare to other similarly priced headphones?

I may not have a *lot* of experience with headphones, but I have a lot of experience listening critically to music from live, on stage, to all types of speakers, and some headphones. Given that, I know when I am hearing great details and quality of sound. I know that in the past I've not been a fan of headphones (of any kind or price) for at home listening, yet I really enjoyed these. I've tried friends' high end headphones and never was comfortable with them, despite the quality of sound. The 238's though were so comfortable, that I barely noticed them. I'm sorry I don't have recent experience with current comparable products. We can't all review everything!

Greetings Kieran.

Thank you for sharing your experience and opinion on the Sennheiser HD 238 Headphones. I for one appreciate a wide variety of opinions and experiences, (preferably accompanied by detailed measurements when applicable,) esp. when it comes to subjective reviews of consumer electronics equipment. You have absolutely nothing for which to apologize, esp. to any person with the gall and ego to use a pseudonym such as “objectivist.” Please feel free to ignore such crass individuals.

Thanks again for your contribution.

Best regards,
Robert J.

Fantastic Review!

This is probably the best headphone (or any soundrelated stuff) review i've ever read! The way you describe the soundexperience is so honest and down to earth, compared to so called "pro's" that keep saying "it's ok for something under 200$". I could understand everything and i really recognized that "first time" feeling good soundgear gives you! This text actually made me buy the HD 238's instead of buying some t-shirts that were 50%, just because they were on sale. Great review!

(Spelling probably sucks, i'm from Sweden. We're stupid.)

Rave review!

A lot of people believe in brands and can't think anymore for themselves.

Some so-called experts even think that a famous name sounds good!

Thank You.....

...for a good review, I like the fit of these - very much like the Bose "on-ears" but it looks like the 3.5mm plug has a large surround, as I would be using these for mostly 5.5mm sockets, I can't believe they don't include one of these in the box - Sennheiser did on may last 'phones (and I don't think that one would fit as it is recessed).

Thanks

I just bought the HD 238 as well; it's like in your review that now I want to listen again to every song in my library, they sound so good.

Thanks for your review, and your no-nonsense approach!

One needs to try them to really appreciate them

I love great sound. I own the Bose Triports, the Bose Quiet Comfort 2's (for flying), and the Sennheiser 100's and a top of the line Sennheiser phone for home listening.

When I saw the new 238's on the Amazon web site, I was skeptical . How can a small phone such as this one perform? The reason I gave them a try was that the single cord seemed a more convenient option to my 100's "chokers."

I was blown away! These headphones are THE most amazing that I have ever used.....amazing not only because of their sound quality, but of the small size of the package.

Don't take my word for it...Try them yourself....You can always return them...but here's a bet that you won't!

My only suggestion to Sennheiser to make these "perfect" would be to make the headband collapsible so that they will fit into a small camera bag.
