Wolfson Class-D Efficiency Gains for Stereo Amplifiers
SAN DIEGO & EDINBURGH, Scotland --(Business Wire)-- May 25, 2004 Wolfson Microelectronics (LSE:WLF.L) has extended its Class D amplifier range with the addition of the WM8602, a 2.1-channel design offering the designer the freedom to optimize output power and quality for a given cost target. The WM8602 is ideal for applications including boom boxes, domestic stereo systems, active speakers and in-car audio. It offers performance audio with 100dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 0.1% THD @ 30W.
The new device joins Wolfson's WM8608 PWM chip for class D surround sound amplifiers with 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 channels for home theatre systems. The WM8602 accepts two audio channels in digital PCM format, and provides two full audio bandwidth output channels plus a reduced bandwidth sub channel as PWM outputs.
The WM8602 is compatible with integrated switching output stages from a number of vendors and can also be used with discrete FET based output stage designs. The WM8602 can be used in amplifiers with output power from milliwatts to megawatts, via selectable CMOS or LVDS outputs. The PWM outputs from the WM8602 device can be configured to be either standard CMOS format or LVDS pairs.
Designers may choose the most cost effective or highest performance mode for their products, depending on cost, form factor and layout considerations. LVDS can help minimize EMI issues and timing differences caused by different track lengths. Further features to enhance playback audio quality include dynamic peak compression, which prevents the output stage clipping while also allowing headroom for tone control, bass management and extra digital gain.
In addition to bass management, DSP and filtering, and conversion from PCM to PWM capable of driving the class D output stage, the WM8602 also features an on-board graphic equalizer and selectable high frequency equalization to suit different speaker types.
Wolfson aims to make it easy for audio product designers to be successful in making the change to Class D by providing feature rich products and comprehensive applications support through the product design cycle. Wolfson believes that low cost high efficiency Class D amplifiers are about to have a major impact on the design of domestic, portable and in-car audio and ease of design and support will be key to ensuring short times to market for new products using this exciting technology.
Price and Availability
The WM8602 is available in a 28-pin SSOP package priced at $3.25 (U.S.) in quantities of 1,000.
