Conclusions

Cambridge Audio has hit a home run with the DacMagic. At $479, it is a perfect upgrade for DACs in music streamers such as the Squeezebox, but it also is some stiff competition for various high end DACs in the market that are used with the digital output from CD transports. It has been rated very highly in several magazines, and Secrets certainly gives it a thumbs up as well.

Distortion.
written by Paul , June 11, 2009

When putting a component on the bench one should remember that the distortion of the speaker is going to be much higher then that of the component. So just becuase the DAC magic measure a little better then the squeeze box it does not mean it will impact the sound.

There is an order of magnitude difference in the measured distortion between the two products. This is very likely to result in a noticeably cleaner sound. Distortion in speakers is only a problem if you play the music very loud. At normal volume, speaker distortion is relatively low.

It could be used with an iPod but you would need to get the digital output from the iPod in order to feed the DacMagic with the digital signal.

It would have been interesting to have tested the USB input since that is how many of these are going to be used. Another review did just that and the unit didn't fare as well. Just a thought.

Beyond Lab Measurements..........

Having owned and auditioned a number of highly regarded and priced DACs, I can honestly say the DacMagic will not disappoint the most discerning listener. It costs less than a good pair of interconnects and
consistently delivers much more. Highly recommended with any music server or transport application. Plain and simple, it sounds terrific.

Difference

I winder if there will a difference with a high end cd player like a denon or a marantz.

A £1200 cd player against £200 dacmagic played at the same time same song there was no difference in sound just a slight more clarity in the dacs favour.

Great sounding outboard soundcard
written by joebobbiggs , July 18, 2009

The DacMagic is a good sounding Dac maybe great sounding dac for the money. It is a GREAT sounding outboard soundcard. Internet radio never sounded so good to these ears. The only complaint I have is that it does not process 176khz or 192khz digital signals.
