Comparing the BD-S2900 to a Samsung....
Did you ever start a Samsung BD??? The noise these machines make... And the picture... Not going to start about that...

The Yam is superiour to the samsungs (1000,1200,1500) by MILES... Sony's 550 and pana's 55 also do well on picture, but as a CD player, the Yamaha kicks ANY blu-ray player at the time.

Conclusion: not the most options, but with an HD receiver (with musical qualities, like Yamaha's DSP models) its a super combo! - Danny

$1200 and still using marginal video processing?

How much money does one have to clear on a player? Is the cost of a Silicon Optix solution really that expensive to implement?

There are still great deals to be had on the Sampsung BDP 1200 so tell me again why I would invest $1200 in the new Yamaha player?

There are some good things about competition I miss in this whole format launch. - westcott

BD-S2900's Internal Decoding

If you let the player decode the format than it will down convert DolbyTrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and dts-HD into Dolby Digital or DTS Digital giving you only 5.1 channels of surround sound at 48khz sampling rate instead of 7.1 channels at 96kHz sampling rate. - AdrianW

Decoding HBR audio

It was unclear from your review whether the unit decoded TrueHD and DTS-MA internally or not. You seemed to indicate the PCM conversion was bad in some way, but correctly decoded PCM from TrueHD and DTS-MA bitstreams is the original audio data, right? - fyzziks

This player sounds like a dressed up BD30. I thought the Denon 2500 was expensive and looks like Yamaha wants a piece of that pie. - EWL5

Don't forget the Panasonic DMP-BD55 and Panasonic DMP-BD35, which seem to be the best bang for the $$ right now. - FiguredMaple

Too Expensive

I can't see how Yamaha can release a Blu-ray player at this price point when the same Blu-ray video quality and possibly better DVD video quality and feature support is found in competing products from Sony, LG, or Samsung.
