Rhapsody Great, Internet Radio Good, Pandora = ?

Its hard to overstate how much I love the RX-V3900 as it was probably the most-researched AV acquisition in my life. It works seamlessly with all HDMI inputs/output and I have outsourced "amping" to my NAD 5-channel and Parasound 2-channel such that the Yamaha is only "amping" the center channel of a 7.1 configuration which swallows me with clean, warm sound. My question is: Does anyone know of a way to add Pandora radio to the receiver? I like Rhapsody but Pandora is good also. Since the AM/FM in my area is horrible, there is no such thing as too many streaming options and Pandora has a different library from Rhapsody. I have thought of hooking up an ipod touch for this purpose but this is a ridiculously expensive solution! I would like to be able to add Pandora to the Yamaha GUI itself. - Geo

mm and cm phono cartridges

I have two turntables and a large album collection. My 3900 will not support my Shure M97, a mm, or my Danon DL-160, a mc. While I did not expect the 3900 to support the mc, I did expect it to support the mm. I bought a Cambridge 640P phono preamp to support both and the sound is amazing! I guesse Yamaha and other major players didn't think folks would still be spining albums, so they downsized their phono section to basically support low-end mm's. How unfortunate. Your thoughts? - bruce

Re RX-V3900 sounds tinny in cd and phono modes

Thanks Chris for your reply

Although I have set the system from 3 locations in the YPAO eq system it is though there is almost nothing below 500HZ.it just sounds tinny!
The only thing I have changed in my system is the amplifier. For years I have used an AU-519 amp and have loved it.It normally ran in straight FLAT mode.

Records and cd's sounded as one would expect from a good system....full bodied
and very natural.(i have worked in a 1200 seat live venue and we had regular concerts from symphony orchestras that we all a la natural with only the vocalist amplified. The Sansui reproduced music that was similar to the natural sound (depending on the recording)

The Yamaha does not........and I don't understand why.

In between the Sansui and the Yamaha amps I had for a short while an entry level Sony amp model STR-DB795 which had the same problem...mind you it only cost a few hundred dollars and I mainly only used it for movies, and kept the Sansui for real sound.

The cd player I use is Denon DCM-500AE and the cartridge is an Ortofon Salsa in conjunction with an Ortofon MCA-76 moving coil preamp.

The reason I had the 125hz boosted 6DB was because it sounded so tinny and hollow and nowhere near natural at all. I even reinstalled the Sansui just to make sure it wasn't me........it wasn't. It just seems for some reason digital amps don't like analogue.
I have reconnected the cd player as your suggestion and it does sound slightly warmer........but a long way from good.

I thought by spending the money on such a highly rated amp , my analog problems would be solved.
I have since put the amp into the parametric manual sound mode and have boosted the bottom end and it now sounds somewhere near the Sansui, but I don't see why I should have to boost the amp at all.

Could you also tell me what frequency and what level the music enhancer works at and can that be boosted at all? It seems to work better on some modes than others.

I know this is long winded but I have to say the Yammy in analog terms has been a great disapointment.
I would appreciate any suggestions. - jeff goopy

A complete receiver

This receiver should be the ultimate one, with the ABT2010 video processor and the best sound for Stereo Music and Multichannel Movie soundtracks.
Plus all the other extra features; I-Pod, Ethernet, HD radio, XM radio, Sirius radio, etc.
Plus the excellent YPAO with adjustable Parametric EQ even in the lower frequencies.
I don't know of any other receiver for the price that is more performing and fully featured as this one.
Or am I missing something? - Robert

I just received a 3900; I had many issues with sound and picture dropping out when I switched channels on ny TV...checked the firmware, the yammy had ver. 1.02 while 1.10 was current. I did the update (easy via usb thumb drive) and now everything is working fine! - Ed

RXV-3900 signal drop out

hi, ive i have a RXV-3900 connected to two samsung LCD's & various input devices. the sound is awesome! especially with video games.

the only problem i have with it, is both picture & sound occasionally drop out for a few seconds. that can be annoying when it happens right in the middle of a movie or when playing PS3 games online. happens most frequently with HDMI-HDMI connections, but sometimes also happens with various analogue inputs.

have any of you guys experienced this problem? - chris

RXV3900 recording!

i greatly appreciated your review that helped me with buying again a Yamaha RXV.

Yet I am encountered a problem that is recording from a VCR (source) connected to the RXV3900 (replaces a Yamaha RXV2600) to my Pioneer DVR.

Both are hooked up via Component to the main RXV3900.

On the Yamaha RXV2600 it used to be a “switch” for setting up the recording source.

It seems that the YAM rxv3900 won't "handshake" when playing VCR and the DVR is in on record mod - nothing is recorded.

Is there a set-up that I have missed? Anyone having similar problems?

Can you give me some guidance on this problem!

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Analog

Jeff,

Why are you running the large bump at 125Hz? Is there a room mode there that causes a lack of mid-bass, or did you just prefer the sound of it? Have you used the room correction in the Yamaha, and did that help at all?

Also, now that you are sending the CD over optical instead of RCA, it's no longer running off an analog signal but instead using the DAC's inside of the Yamaha to convert it to analog instead of those in the CD player, so some of what you are hearing could be a difference in the DAC's. Have you tried running the CD player using the RCA outputs and setting the Yamaha to ir's Direct/Straight mode, so it will bypass all processing to see how that compares? - ChrisHeinonen

Yamaha RX-V 3900 Sounds tinny in CD and phono modes.

Although I am pleased with this new unit in movie mode the one big disappointment is the tinny sound of the cd (in optical) and phono

I have the tone control set 125HZ at +6DB plus the DRC and the DSP both on.
The only way I seem the get warmth is to run both in Neo 6 music mode which brings in the subwoofer ,,,,and it's still not a natural sound.

It should reproduce perfect analogue without all these extras switched on.

Any suggestions? are there any more updates? I'm running on 107 update which I think is the current one.

My speakers and ancillary equipment has not changed But I was used to hearing it thru a Sansui AU-519 which ran on flat (no boost) .

I would expect the Yamaha to reproduce at the very least as good a sound from cd and phono.especially the CD as it now runs in optical!!

Your thoughts would be appreciated,

puzzeled

RX-V3900 or AVR-4308A

Based on reviews and forums only (not on the dealer suggestions since they totally confuse me), I have now refined my selection of receivers down to two: RX-V3900 or AVR-4308A. Besides, I should note that I had no chance to listen to any of those four receivers with my JBLs.

TX-NR906 seems the most powerful unit of all, but it may have downsides for me such that I might feel uncomfortable with the GUI, remote controller, speaker setup, WEB support, may be heat problem, etc. (btw, I have neither read nor heard a solid reason for this yet). And, SC-LX71 wouldn’t be in the same range basically.

I noticed that I didn't define my JBLs which are LS80 fronts, LS60 rears, LS40 and LS120P.

In general, audio/video capabilities will suffice for me in this range, but if the power of the unit would be an issue, then I will need to jump to a higher model.

This is another issue which I haven’t resolved if the power is not really enough for the speakers. There is a big price difference between this range and the next more powerful range, e.g. RX-Z11 and AVR-5308A. The latter does not exist where I live, but I wouldn’t like to raise the bar that much high anyway considering my practical usage at home.

Would you be confident with staying in this range by bi-amping the fronts (I am not meaning bi-wiring.)

I am impatiently looking forward to your kind comments on the best match.

Hi, many thanks for the review. With this review, I am now really close to choose RX-V3900 among the others stated in the title.

I also wonder if I could have a full performance from my JBL LS 5.1 system. Or, would you suggest one of other receivers instead.

I'd highly appreciate your comments on my choice. - Altug Yalin

I have a Yamaha RX-V2600 ~2.5 years old,and a Blue Ray player Panasonic DMP-BD55, because of the new sound codes i.e. Dolby True-HD & DTS-HD Master Audio, that my unit can covert i am considering buying the RX-V3900.

In your opinion is there a significant difference in sound that is worth making this upgrade

Your comment/suggestion is greatly appreciated.

3900 vs 3808

Techgal-

Sorry for the delay in my response. It is hard to give a definitive answer on any question that is basically "which sounds better" when comparing similarly spec'd gear from reputable companies since it becomes very subjective. I like both of these brands and models. Since I use my AVR more for watching TV and movies, the video and surround performance is important to me, so I have never personally compared receivers on stereo alone. That being said, I hold by my statement in the review that I found myself wanting to listen to music more than usual while reviewing the Yamaha because of the warmth, depth, and overall quality of the sound it produced. So, for what it's worth, the Yamaha is an EXCELLENT receiver if you want to use it mostly for stereo music listening. Is it worth $800 more? Hard to say. I suppose that depends on your definition of "worth" and what your budget allows you to do. - Gabriel Lowe
