amazing Subwoofer but $2800?

I know this is an amazing device --- but for $2800 I could buy the wood, an amp and the and the actual drivers and PR from this company and make something much more powerful. As good as this is, it would be worth it to build something yourself, and pay for the materials for the same price and not have this markup. This inspires me to make some sawdust! Good job Earthquake. - murphy

An outstanding subwoofer

I went to a warehouse sale put on by an internet audio gear retailer. They were selling off equipment that they had used as models in their catalogs as well as demo products provided by manufacturers such as Earthquake.

So I arrive at the warehouse just as the thing is opening for the event, and there, right in front of me, is this subwoofer marked down from, get this, from $2600+ to, I mean this blows me away, $100.

I dunno why they were selling it so cheaply. I bought it a year ago, and the thing performs flawlessly. It's almost scary how much air pressure this thing generates during loud bass passages in movies without sounding boomy.

Bass becomes a physical presence in your room. - Chris Wall

I can certainly appreciate Iron Mike's enlightening comments as well as others' here on this sub. Certainly its performance is not in question; it's all about finding the price/performance point one is comfortable with. For those whom price is not in their equation then this sub is clearly well-suited. I will continue to look for subs under $500 and satisfy myself with the best performer I can ascertain in that category. - BigPadg

I wouldn't have anything other than this subwoofer. For anyone feeling a need to be bounced out of their seat while watching a movie this can do it without anything extra, like seat rumblers.

There have been a few times I have had people ask me to tone it down because they really felt the lights might come loose from the walls (have wall sconces in the theater). It is so realistic, with so little distortion, you do feel as if you are right in the middle of the action. A 120" screen doesn't hurt, but I think the subwoofer is absolutely fantastic, regardless of the price.

I have had 4 other subwoofer in the past, but nothing has come close to this. - twilde

Sometimes you do get what you pay for..........

While $2800.00 is more than I would ever pay for a sub, I appreciate that not everyone shares my opinion. I'm happy to see reviews for this kind of equipment because it goes a long way to put lesser priced equipment's performance in perspective. I love having performance data from a top performer like this to compare with subs that are in my budget. The idea is to get as close as you can in performance while keeping your wallet in mind. As for the markup in electronis, what else is new?

Sounds like Iron Mike's beef is with Best Buy so why pick on Earthquake because he can't afford such a high end sub? If he thinks a $349.00 sub can go toe to toe with the Earthquake Supernova MKVI 15 then maybe he should have read John Johnson's reviews for $350.00 subs before making such a foolish claim. If he can find one for $350.00 that comes close, I'll take 2! - Mick

Is a BMW overpriced? Ask someone who can buy it and enjoys it. If it is to expensive for your personal taste, buy something you can afford, but don't tell everyone else what they can or can't buy. - Jmilton7043

Way too expensive

$2,899 for a subwoofer is WAY TO MUCH MONEY!

You can buy awesome 12" subwoofers that go down to 22hz with 500 watts of power and produce similar distortion levels for less than $349.

Speakers are an industry where the markup is way too high -- just as bad as HDMI cables.

Let me give you an example.

One of the companies I hate most is Best Buy, because of their awful reputation for not honoring warranties. I know this is true from personal experience, since they would not honor a $400 insurance policy I purchased. This is why five states have attorney generals seeking legal action against Best Buy, and even a Senator from Connecticut is seeking legal action against Best Buy because Best Buy does not honor expensive insurance policies.

I have a friend who works at Best Buy. I told him that there was no way in the world I was going to pay $79.99 for the HDMI cable that they were selling. I told my friend that the people at Best Buy told me "not to buy cheap $5 HDMI cables off the Internet." I mentioned this to my friend since I was telling him how a couple online websites were selling high-quality 24k gold-plated HDMI cables for only $7 plus $4 for shipping.

My friend spoke up and said that he had just recently purchased that $79.99 HDMI from Best Buy and he told me that he got an employee discount. I asked him how much he paid. He said he gets items for "cost plus 5%." I asked him how much that was on the HDMI cable, and he told me $5.20.

This means Best Buy marks their $80 HDMI cable up by about $75. That just goes to show you how much electronics are marked up.

It's the same thing with speakers and A/V Receivers. There was an A/V Receiver at ABC Warehouse that was selling for $999, but I got it for $500 as part of a package deal when I bought speakers. My front speakers were supposed to be $999, but I got them for $500. My rear speakers were supposed to be $499, but I got them marked down to $250. My subwoofer had a manufacturers suggested retail price of $399, but I got it for $100 (yes, ONE-hundred dollars) as part of a deal where I bought seven sets of those $20 Monster Gold-Plated Banana things and spent $49 on a 25' LFE cable.

Subwoofers are the most overpriced type of speaker there is. College kids can make subwoofers simply by buying the individual parts and putting them together, just like with a computer tower.

When companies like Klipsh charge $13,000 (yes, thirteen thousand dollars) for a seven-speaker THX setup with one subwoofer, it is incredibly overpriced, just like an HDMI cable.

If this $2900 Earthquake Supernova subwoofer is so great, how come it isn't "THX Certified." The reason is because THX is just a "name" for making money. That's how George Lucas became a billionaire.

Look at THX movies on Blu-ray. The preview that says "THX" is in very high quality 96hz sound while it lasts for about seven seconds. But as soon as the movie starts it drops back down to 48hz. It's all a scam to try and get your money.

Trust me, you can buy brands like JBL, Infinity, and many others for lower prices online or from retailers who use negotiable pricing than you can companies like Bose and Polk Audio who use their pathetic "fixed pricing" nonsense so retailers aren't allowed to lower the prices.

The bottom line is that you can buy products of very similar performance for a lot less money. If you are going to spend $2800 on a subwoofer, you probably have a THX A/V Receiver that supposedly works better with a THX subwoofer, so doesn't it make sense to do that?

The electronics industry is a joke right now. It doesn't make sense to spend $5500 on a new Denon A/V Receiver because it has the "new" stuff, since next year there will be $700 A/V Receivers from everyone else who offer that same stuff. - Iron Mike
