10 or 12

Thanks for your respective input. I will be running Monitor Audio GS 60s, LCR, GS10s, and fx's in two different rooms, one powered by Pioneer Elite SC25 and the other with a Yama ZR7. I am strongly considering the Opt 12. Thoughts? Thanks! - dwa

What you choose will also depend on your main speakers, and where you can put the sub. I would not be worried about the 12 being sloppy. Instead, if you can cross over to your mains at 80Hz (or lower) then go with the 12". If you have small speakers that do not go low enough the 10 may be a better choice. - Jared Rachwalski

10 vs 12

Fredrik and dwa:

I found the bass from the Optimum 12 to be extremely tight and tuneful. The bass didn't extend really deep like a Hsu Research or a Bag End sub, but it did extend well below my threshold of hearing and into the realm of tactile response. I felt this sub was a good fit for both movies and music.

Check with your local dealer. Maybe you could purchase (or better yet, borrow) one of the subs you are interested in and try it in your space. That is always the best way to make a buying decision.

I really liked the Optimum 12 and think it is an excellent choice for all-around sub woofer purposes. And I have a large room too.

Thanks,

Opinions please...Opt 10 vs 12 for combo audio and theater

I would appreciate any insight/opinions as to Opt 10 vs 12 for combo audio/theater use. I am 65/35 towards audio performance, and am concerned a 12 inch sub will be too "sloppy" for my tastes. On the otherhand, I have a (roughly) 25x25 ft room with open area extending, and am not sure the Opt 10 can do what I'm looking for for theater.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts. - dwa

F-series Velodyne servo tech

Why did they discontinue the F-series 10",12" and the 15". They were highly touted for in the 70's. I bought the 12" and I'm still using it. You counldn't get a better self powered with remote and the clarity of low bass. They worked well with bookshelf speakers and they were making some powerful book shelf speakers back then when Pro-Logic Surround was the big deal. I wish I had another one. I bet there is still a market out there for the F-Series especially for people like me that wished I could buy another just like the one I have. I even made a custom size wooden cart on casters to place it where ever it sounds best around in the house. I use poly rope to transport it with ease. The Optimum was a replacement for the F-Series. - Imre Botchi

Velodyne Optimum-12 In High End Stereo

I have a pair of these. They replaced JL Audio f112s, which are a too analytical and dry sounding for me. They take a long time - 300+ hours - to really break in. They do their job without fuss or being obvious. The volume and crossover point adjustments are critical and just one step in the volume adjustment can make or break the overall sound. But get it right and these are great subs.

Other system components: Dali Euphonia RS3 speakers, Marantz MA-9S2 amps, SOTA Cosmos turntable, Manley Steelhead phono/preamp. - JerryS

Compare?

How does this sub compare against two svs sb12 plus?

Because there both 12 inch and have a sealed box. And they have an eq build in to them.

And for the price of one Velodyne i can get two svs...

Thanks in Advance

Velodyne brought up three of their new subwoofer lines for me to do some testing, but in the case of the Optimum line, it was the Optimum-10. This was at an early stage in shipments and the subs were just starting to arrive from China. The Optimum-12 ended up being the Optimum version that was sent out for review. I do have measurements for the Optimum-10 however. The frequency response is flat down to 27 Hz then declines 10 dB at 20 Hz. For THD plus N vs. Frequency, distortion is about 10% between 20 and 30 Hz, then declines to 0.5% at 60 Hz. This is excellent performance for a 10 inch sub, and one can only expect the Optimum-12 to do even better.

Part of the problem in bench testing for us now is that we added 17 new writers, and we will not have the time to bench test everything, including subwoofers which is one item I love to put on the bench. - JEJ
