Emotiva XPA-2. Simply Amazing

I purchased my XPA-2 3 months ago and I'm in music heaven. This amp is a beast in weight and sound output clarity. Running through my 6092b Yamaha HTR and my Polk Audios RtiA9's I can hear every detail the artist has recorded a cd. I've been listening to the same music for 40 years and realize I was missing alot of detail. I decided to crank up the XPA-2 and it wanted to go even higher. My wife drove up in her car and said she could hear the music clearly from down the road.I had all the windows closed and sat in separate room too. Make sure you eat your Wheaties because this amp is really heavy.
I've owned other higher end rated amps and the Emotiva would easily stand up to if not supersede them. Excellent bang for your buck, you'd be foolish not give this a try.. You shall see. - Gord

Regarding class-A 'superiority'

With regard to the question by Joshuah (Dec 17 2008): The still perpetuated superiority of class-A stems from decades ago, when semiconductor operation was still poorly understood and amplifiers suffered from cross-over distortion. This has been overcome many years ago, and any half-decent class- AB design these days has no more distortion than class-A. This is easily shown by analysis and measurements.

Not distracting anything from the Emotiva performance/comments; just to put the record straight. - Ampdog (EE)

Purchased the XPA-2 along with Emotiva's preamp and cd player this past summer. Matched it with Magnepan's 1.7. Combined this with a great dac & Spotify Premium and I really can't get over how marvelous this all sounds! True high end and an enormous improvement over my surround system, Marantz with Paradigms all around. I just close my eyes and luxuriate in sound quality that I would have a difficult time trying to improve. Oh, forgot to mention the SHU subwoofer. Top to bottom scrumptious sound! I've been listening for 40 years and have finally achieved my music goals. - P.J. Brisson

Yes, another positive review! :)

I bought an XPA-2 amplifier back in August this year and I must say that it is nothing short of spectacular!

I have this amplifier running a pair of Australian made Richter Emperor mains.
Here are my personal impression after owning this amp for a few months..

The soundstage and imaging they produce is really good, giving a great sense of space and atmosphere that seems to come from beyond the speaker enclosures.
Dead centre lead singer vocals and centre focussed drums with well placed instruments and effects throughout the stage. Subtle details like background vocals and delicate chimes are brought to life in your music track.
The high end has no apparent shrill or harshness and is pleasantly smooth. Vocals are crisp, maybe ever so slightly on the warmer side of neutral. The reproduction of detail such as venue acoustics is portrayed very well too.

Bass is tight and well controlled no matter what you play, everything from trance to hard rock, this amplifier will not break a sweat.

Dynamic range.. This thing will scare the life out of you watching movies! lol
Attack is just insane.

My Denon receiver that set me back almost AUD $3,000 does not come close to touching sound of this caliber. The Denon is now used as a pre/pro for the XPA-2 and it works a real treat with it's built-in AL24 Processing Plus DAC.
No EQ, treble or bass adjusts or enhancers are needed at all for my 2 channel listening. I run my signal 'as-is' from source to speakers with the Denon in pure direct mode.

I'm no audiophile by any means but I've heard some great gear owned by friends and auditioned amps/speakers in local HiFi stores for fun and I have to say the price/performance of the XPA-2 amplifier is one of the best deals you are likely to see around.

Much respect to this company for it's high end products and fantastic customer service. - Straw Queen of Darwin Australia

I just purchased the xpa-2, and might I add some other beastly qualities like a grizzly bear awakened from sleep and a rhinoceros let on the loose when you listen to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn,Bernard Allison and Buddy Guy,it leaves you monosyllabic, but at the same time this amp is as a lamb, softer than budding cotton in tenessee, that is if you like Diana Krall, Kristi barron, K.D Lang, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. The bells and whistles are clear, you even hear the moans and groans of the musicians in to it. I must say, I've yet to put on some Led Zepplin, Van Halen, Motley Crue, and ACDC to see how that fares. After reading the reviews of others, I shouldn't be dissappointed. And by the way, I didnn't pay a lot for this muffler. Bravo!! EMOTIVA.

P.S I'm looking to get rid of a Parasound five channel amp 125w, and a Marantz five channel amp 140w High current. No match for EMO. - The Fuss (Critical listener)

I have a Denon AVR-3311CI, and paired it with the Emotiva XPA-5, and never looked back... it totally rocks with Clarity, Headroom, Front Soundstage presence, Punch, Drive, and my Klipsch's have never been happier.

Would highly recommend EMOTIVA !! - DPS

XPA-2

I recently purchased an XPA-2. It brought my system to life. I heard improved sound stage, resolution and depth on my B&W 683s right out of the box. The speakers just blossomed. A couple of "break in" months later I bi-wired the B&Ws and things just got better. The inner detail of the mix on any recording is just
there for the listening. One of the best audio purchases I have ever made.
And can this amp go loud.
A friend took my purchasing advice and described to me the same improvements with his Vandersteen 2CEs. - dmac

I bought my XPA-2 two weeks ago and I really love it. It has plenty of raw power AND a very refined sound. I replaced a Vincent SP-331 with this and the XPA-2 is better in every aspect.

Pace, Power, Punch, Insight, Clarity, Quality, all this comes with this amp at astonishing low price! - Jonas

XPA-2 +XPA-3 vs XPA-5

To JTB,
I have been asking that question myself. Once on a forum and once to Emotiva themselves.

Check out how much each amp weighs. The XPA-2 weighs more than the XPA-5 and the XPA-3 weighs almost as much.

It really depends on what speakers you have (or so I am told). I have B&W all the way around and they sound much better with more power.

Both advisors said I should go with 2 amps.

Now I have to make a decision on a prepro! (Anyone want to buy a used Sunfire Ultimate receiver?) - Adam

Pre-amp Voltage Output

Much has been made on the Emo website about not matching these amps with a pre-pro that has a low, pre-amp voltage output. All Integra pre-pros are 1.0v, fixed. Do you think this really makes that much of a difference? Really need the features offered by the DHC-40.1, but unclear if it will truly limit my XPA-2 and XPA-5's capabilities. Your thoughts are much appreciated! - Barb in Jersey

Praise to the Xpa-2 right?

I'm more curious about the xpa-5. Seems I can find review on top of review on the xpa-2, but what about the xpa-5 for people that barely have enough to buy one amp and definitely not 2?! There's only 50 watt difference (put on your thinking caps, which one has more wattage total?) but yet the price is what $100 less on special? I'd like to think the xpa-5 in stereo mode could put out nearly the juice of the xpa-2 with the same quality sound, but also run all 5 speakers for ht? Anyone agree?
Or is it that the xpa-2 is the only way to go if you're looking at emotiva's amps? - JTB

Bought out perhaps are the big money folks

I am only intuiting that big money amp folks may be purchasing their ads with big money. I just wonder if any magazines may just be bought out. I belive the integrity and low key approach to Emo really shines and what folks are really looking to. They seem to take a humble approach and thier customer service is stellar to say the least. I won't have anything to do with the big money folks and too I am not a big money person. I believe Emotiva is more word of mouth and internet savy.
Go Emotiva!

Why so few in-depth reviews of Emotiva in the audio press?

Does Emotiva embarrass the rest? Does Emotiva 2-channel sound obviate the need for the hyper-expensive equipment that the audio press is so fond of? Is that the reason there are so few mainstream reviews? Does Emotiva 2-channel make the high-end somewhat irrelevant? It makes me wonder if the astronomical prices of equipment reviewed by Stereophile and The Absolute Sound are simply (now) unnecessary -- if they ever were. If true, Emotiva will kill their business, so why would they review Emotiva? I'm curious.

Comments would be appreciated.

P.S. I have heard all manner of high-end stereo electronics -- I've even owned some of it as my budget will allow. - David Wynsen
