High THD at 20hz?

JEJ, here is HSU's response to the seemingly high THD at 20HZ and 100db ...

"I'd like to thank Ross Jones and Dr. John Johnson for the great review on the ULS-15 and HB-1 MK2/HC-1 MK2.

Some of you may be wondering why THD was 15% @ 20Hz @ 100db with mic 1 ft away from the cone. In Dr. Johnson's room, at the location where the ULS was placed, notice from the frequency response graph at 1 ft distance that there is a deep bass suckout where 20Hz is 6db down vs 60Hz. This inflates the 3rd order harmonic with a 20Hz test tone, which is what caused THD to be relatively high at that frequency. With outdoor measurements, the ULS would be no more than 1-2db down at 20Hz compared to 60Hz.

In our own demo room, where we don't have a deep bass suckout, THD @ 1ft from the ULS-15 was actually less than 5% @ 20Hz.

So the moral of the story is to use some caution when comparing results from one room to another or to outdoor measurements. In fact, even a small change in position within a given room will mean that data cannot be easily compared between one sub and another. For example, the ULS must be in a different location than the JL subs that Dr. Johnson measured, because there is not a prounced 45Hz suckout on the frequency response graph at 2m distance with the ULS.

P.S.: Even if not directly comparable due to potential differences in positioning, the THD measured from 25-50Hz @ 100db @ 1ft was even less on the ULS-15 compared to the F113 (note that 25-50Hz data is not shown in the review). Also, the frequency response is much more extended than the F113 too."

I'm curious as to why this wasn't mentioned in a follow up point given the sub's THD number doesn't fare as well compared to say some other subs measured (PB13, F113, etc)? I know 15% isn't necessarily high at 100db and 20hz, but it is when compared to these other subs (albeit, they cost more). - SD

ULS 15 vs. MK 3 HO with TURBO

How do these subs compare below 25hz? I was planning on buying a mk3 HO with turbo this spring. Through contact with HSU, I learned that the HO sub and the turbo have been discontinued.

I can't get a straight answer from them about the perforance of their new sub. All signs point to HSU pushing "new, more expensive, wireless connection..." as opposed to building a product with superior performance. I don't care about running a subwoofer cable. Everybody reading this has one. I do care that they want to charge $400 more for a "new and improved" sub with what appears to be less than HALF the output at 18hz.

Any comparison/ first hand experience? - Snak3s

Center Channel Replacement

I have an Energy AC-300 center that seems a little 'canny' at times. Do you think the HSU center would be a vast improvement? Also looking for my best subwoofer option under $1000.

I am running an NAD T785 with Piega TP 5 fronts, Def. Tech sub (no model number on the sub, entry level 10") and Platinum PT 801's for surround. My listening room is 12Wx20Lx8H.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. - Jason Massie

In the specifcation box, they state Sensitivity: 92 dB / 1m / 2.83V in half space. Therefore, the exact conditions for that 92 dB sensitivity measurement are stated. They are not misleading anyone. Many companies just say 92 dB without the rest of the information. Those are the ones that can be confusing. - JEJ

this is not a one watt rating its at 2.83 volts 1 watt for 8 ohm speakers. these are 6 ohm speakers and should be measured at 2.45 volts for one watt rating. at least they don't say its a one watt rating. so they know that they are misleading the unknowing consumer on purpose. not telling a lie. - aaron d

I was considering the HB-1 book shelfs to replace my current surround speakers in a 7.1 configuration. I now wonder if I should consider the HB-1 and HC to replace my Main speakers, which are MTX AAL 1240's 200 watt with 50hz-22khz full range 4-way speakers and MTX center channel 100watt 525SB 100hz-20khz. Would I hear are notice a huge improvement in sound quality in a home theater set-up. I currently have (1)VTF3 MK3 sub from HSU, which is outstanding. my surronds are low end bose and yamaha. Any advice would be appreciated. - Scott

Heir to Titan?

Ross,
Are you familiar with the Pardigm Titan bookshelf speakers? Paradigm recently "updated" ( =discontinued, IMO) the old bookshelf stalwart Titans (which Brian Florian reviewed here http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_6_3/paradigm-titan-speakers.html ). Your high recommendation and the low price point (Titan v2's were around $200 I think) made me wonder if these HSU HB-1 speakers could be considered the heir to the old Titan's throne? I love my Titans and used to recommend them a lot to people just entering in to the realm of "good" audio since they were so affordable. I've been looking for something in their stead to recommend now. Sounds like the HSU HB-1's might be the ticket. - Kieran Coghlan

The distortion numbers for 30, 40, 50, 80 Hz, and other frequencies are shown in the THD plus N vs. Frequency graph. I show the specific 20 Hz distortion spectrum just to have an idea of the relative harmonic peaks at one frequency. - JEJ
