Have you done this: Go to the summary tab, choose Restore and let iTunes do it stuff. Do not disconnect the Ipod until the process is complete. Now your iPod will be ready for use.

If so, the I would do a hard reset:
Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons simultaneously until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Center (Select) button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.

Now try re-connecting to iTunes.

Disconect the iPod, reboot the computer.

With the iPod disconected from the computer turn the iPod on.
Do you see the Sad face :(?

Now reconect to iTunes and try the repair/restore function.

If it stil doesn't work ther may be other issues than just the Hard Drive. - Jared Rachwalski

thanks for the manual. The replacement of my hd worked like a charm. The only thing that was a bit tricky was to find out, that my replacement hd had the cable connection upside down. So i had to build in the hd the other way around. - fred

Even the replacement drives are at least $150 and they are limited to 160 GB. No one seems to make a larger drive than that. I would just suggest getting another iPod and put your additional music there. - JEJ

..with the classic series.

My search shows me that the 160gb drive is this one:
MK1626GCB
Which is a 1.8" wide x 8mm tall drive.
I am unable to locate any drives that size larger than 160gb.

I have an iPod 160GB and I have almost run out of space (less than 10gb left). I would prefer not to delete but get a bigger drive. Do you have any suggestions for a bigger hard drive that might work with my iPod classic? - Bayoor

Jared/Eugene,

The iPod Touch, like the iPhone and the Nano, are entirely flash based, so there is no hard drive that can fail on them. The flash could start to fail, but in that case capacity would start to slowly diminish over time instead of all failing at once. - Chris Heinonen

Sorry, no idea on how to replace the hard drive in the touch as I do not have one to work on.

As for the MK1011GAH - I have not looked around for this drive in a long time, so I have no idea where is the cheapest.

I would check the usuall suspects (google, ebay, etc).

Good luck. - Jared Rachwalski

Thanks to this article I was able to replace the HD in my 4th Gen IPod. I just used the same Toshiba 20G which I got off Amazon for $28 plus shipping. The hardest part was getting the case open. I just used a very small screwdriver since the case is all scratched up anyway. After I got the HD to format I kept getting error messages which I assume is because the Ipod is so old, but after reformatting it a couple of times I got it to work. Hopefully, it will continue to function, but for $28 and some time, it was well worth the effort. - Michael
